Sylva Rena Baptist Church kicked off a new ministry during a luncheon last Thursday with the King of Rock and Roll. Elvis impersonator Drew Warford, who serves as Amory First Baptist Church’s worship leader and pianist Matt Chisholm, entertained the crowd that included 15 special guests and a dozen volunteers for the new Adopt A Widow Ministry.
The meeting marked the first quarterly meeting for widows and Warford’s beautiful voice delighted everyone with his rendition of “Hound Dog” and “Love Me Tender.”
“We want to laugh and have fun, however the emphasis must always be on our faithful God,”Warford reported.
David and JoAnn Plunkett, who recently joined Sylva Rena Baptist Church, shared their experience in the Adopt A Widow Ministry.
“This luncheon is to have fun and make our guests feel special,” JoAnn noted.
Couples in the Sylva Rena Baptist Church volunteer for this new ministry to provide support for widows or single seniors. The volunteers will provide their phone number along with comforting messages such as “Call us if we can help. We will be there for you.” The support could include a ride to a doctor’s appointment or grocery shopping. They may bring a meal or fresh vegetables, or simply call to ask, “Are you okay?”
Sylva Rena Pastor Shane Crawford reported that he was familiar with a widows ministry before he came to Sylva Rena.
“God put it on my heart for our church. I began to pray about someone to lead it,” Crawford said. “God answered my prayer by sending a couple who served in this ministry before, David and JoAnn Plunkett. I said, ‘This is on my heart; you are here. You know what to do. Let’s go!’ The Plunketts enlisted the help they needed and I get just to watch God bless others through this ministry.”
