WATER VALLEY – April is going to be an exciting month at Blackmur Memorial Library with a number of different programs for people of all ages and interests.

The fun will start Saturday, April 6 from 9-11 a.m. with a children’s program sponsored and conducted by the Water Valley High School Interact Club. The Library Day for Littles program will feature fun games and activities for kids, all planned and carried out by members of the club. The Interact Club is sponsored by the Water Valley Rotary Club and this is the second years for the program.

The following Monday, April 8 the library will host an eclipse “watch party” on the library grounds. The library’s yard is an ideal place to view the eclipse and the library will have a limited number of eclipse glasses and viewing card available for those who attend. In the week leading up to the eclipse, we will also have activity packets for kids available. Parents can come by and pick up a packet beginning Monday, April 1.

The eclipse will begin about 12:30 p.m. and peak about 1:50 p.m., ending about 3:10 p.m. While the eclipse will not reach totality here, it will still be about 90 to 95 percent and should make spectacular viewing, weather permitting. All are invited to come at any time during the event and join in the fun.

April is also National Poetry Month and the library, along with the Friends of the Blackmur Memorial Library, will be hosting a poetry event Thursday, April 25 from 7-8 p.m. at the library. We have asked that students at Davidson Elementary School and Water Valley Junior High and  High School submit original poems to their English teachers. Winners will be selected and invited to read their poems during the event. The top two poems selected from the elementary, junior high and high schools will receive prizes sponsored by the Friends program.

The last event will actually take place on Wednesday, May 1, with a Lunch and Learn Program sponsored by the library and hosted by the Friends program. Grant Thompson will be the guest speaker and will present a program on Casey Jones and Water Valley’s Casey Jones Museum where he serves as curator. The program will take place a day after the anniversary of the wreck at Vaughn, Mississippi in which Jones was killed early on April 30, 1900. Refreshments will be served after the program.

Also during April we’re asking kids to help us decorate the library for Spring. We have flowers and butterflies just waiting for a little artistic touch before they go on display at the library’s front desk. We have the supplies ready and parents can bring your little ones by any time during library hours to help us brighten up the building.

The library is located at 608 Blackmur Drive and is open Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. The library, along with city offices, will be closed Friday, March 28. If you have any questions about the library or any of the programs planned, please contact us at (662) 473-2444 or email at black
