Kids In the Park In Oakland Celebrates Back to School

OAKLAND – Students across the area are invited to join Kids in the Park, an outdoor back-to-school celebration, at the James Riley Swearengen Walking Track and Park in Oakland at 61 Walnut Street on Saturday, Aug. 10 from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

Magician Steve Thomas, will entertain from 11:15 am to noon. Prior to the magic show, there will be games and challenges for all ages, including the Imagination Playground from the Mississippi Children’s Museum. Kids are able to build their own playground with the traveling exhibit being rented by the Oakland Area Chamber. Kids will receive a bingo-style card with prizes for participating in activities and searching out treasures.

The first 50 students receive free snow-cones and school supplies will be handed out until supplies are exhausted. Hot dogs and chips, provided by Oakland’s new community marketplace Farmacy Oakland, will be served by the Oakland Beautification Committee. Water and juice is being provided by Chamber Vice-President Mike Robinson.

School supplies are still being collected at the Oakland Public Library and Cadence Bank.

The Oakland Youth Collaborative will be on-site to share information about the new youth entrepreneur program where students in grades sixth through 12 can create, market, and sell their products and services.

Parents should bring lawn chairs and blankets for seating. There will be space for tents as well.
The event is sponsored by Oakland Area Chamber, Oakland Beautification Committee, Town of Oakland, Friends of the Library, Friends of Cossar State Park, the Ed and Becky Meek Foundation and Farmacy Market.
