The Water Valley High School cheerleader squad had their first performance on the field during Meet the Blue Devils Friday night. The junior high cheer squad was also introduced.
It’s been another great week in the Valley, and probably the busiest since the start of school. Fall is definitely in full swing as the most jam-packed season of the academic year.
On Monday, Miss Amanda Arman from the Northwest Mississippi Community College (Oxford campus) took a trip to Water Valley to put on an orientation for our dual-credit students. The dual-credit program allows juniors and seniors at Water Valley High School to take college courses through NWCC and gain both high school and college credits. Miss Arman had an informational presentation, walking students through each step of the process to start their classes. She also explained the benefits and resources the students have access to as a member of the dual credit program. Her presentation will surely be helpful on August 26 when classes start.
I really appreciate the WVHS staff for helping to make sure that the transition into the start of classes runs smoothly this year. I also appreciate the effort they have put into helping senior year be a successful one for the class of 2025.
WVHS Counselor Jonathan. Barnes held a student and parent meeting for seniors on Tuesday, August 20.Topics included FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid, important dates, planned campus visits, and other information as seniors prepare for college.
There was also a short presentation from Get2College about Mississippi financial aid. I believe it is so important for seniors to be ready for the challenges that come with applying to college, and I value the time that our faculty are putting aside to help us prepare for the future.
Our Lady Devils volleyball team had a big week as they played not once, not twice, but three times! Their first game was on Tuesday versus Winona. The team took on the Tigers at the J.J. Knox Gymnasium in Winona. Next they played the South Pontotoc Cougars in a match at home on Thursday. The team fought hard, but unfortunately fell short in both games, losing 0-3 sets in each game.
Next, the team hosted a tournament at home on Saturday. The Blue Devils first battled South Panola, beating the Tigers 2-0 sets in a clean sweep. Next they took on Potts Camp in an extremely close game. The girls were defeated but worked very hard, barely losing the first set 23-25. Potts Camp was able to create a wider score gap, beating the Devils 15-25 in the second set.
I asked freshman Natalie Hernandez, setter, about her thoughts on the season so far.
“I think we have a lot of potential,” Hernandez replied, “The team has been through a lot already this season, but as we progress more and more with each practice, I think we can become more than what we were last season by a lot.”
Hernandez went on to discuss how she hopes the team can continue to grow and play each game better than the last.
The Blue Devil golf team also played this week! The team played at the Dogwoods course and faced South Panola and Grenada. The team beat out Grenada but fell to South Panola.
Our biggest event of the week, however, was undoubtedly Meet the Devils on Friday night! The cheer program started it off at 5:45 with a Devil Dolls performance, followed by routines that the junior high and high school squads have worked hard on these past few weeks. Our first time out on the field was a little rough, but that just means that we can only get better from here.
I’m so proud of how both squads have grown and adapted to the challenges we have faced so far this season. After our introduction, East Webster and Ripley played the first scrimmage game.
Our football program was then introduced, starting with the high school team, followed by the junior high. The Blue Devils played their first scrimmage against Ripley. Between the second and last scrimmage, the golf team, band, volleyball team, and cross country team were introduced.
The Blue Devil football team played hard, and I can’t wait to cheer them on at the first official match of the season. They will face Independence at home on August 30, and it’s sure to be an exciting game.
Next week may prove to be even busier, so make sure you keep an eye out to see what students get up to!
