WATER VALLEY – The Rotary Club of Water Valley welcomed Rotary District Governor Dave Rhylander during the October 15 meeting. The local Rotary Club is part of Rotary 6800 in Zone 31 and is part of the global organization called Rotary International and touts 1.2 million members worldwide.
Rhylander, who was visiting from Collierville, has been a Rotarian since 2017 and is retired from a career in agriculture. His presentation highlighted local and global projects, membership and growth, giving to the Foundation and the Rotary brand. He stated that Rotary International has been working to eradicate polio for over 35 years and their efforts have reduced polio cases by 99 percent, preventing an estimated 650,000 cases of paralysis each year.
In collaboration with two other area district governors, Ryhlander has helped to initiate a new fundraiser called “Coffee Saver Club” where Rotary members can donate the cost of “a coffee a day” (worth $2.50 per day equaling $10 per month) to support service projects through the Rotary Foundation. Rotarians learned that for as little as 60 cents, a child can be protected from polio, $50 can provide clean water to help fight waterborne illness and $500 can launch an anti-bullying campaign and create a safe environment for children.
The Rotary Foundation transforms monetary gifts into service projects that change lives both close to home and around the world and helps Rotary members to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace by improving health, providing quality education, improving the environment, and alleviating poverty.
Members and guests enjoyed the presentation and Rhylander was presented a gift basket by President Cinnamon Foster that was purchased from South Main Boutique in downtown Water Valley, owned by Kathy Williams. The basket was packed full of delicious snacks representing Water Valley flair including a jar of delicious watermelon pickles, a new item in Williams’ shop.
