The week leading up to a break from school is always a mixture of excitement and slow-paced days for students. This was the case as we headed into Thanksgiving break here at Water Valley! The days moved slow with anticipation of a whole week without school looming, but thankfully there was plenty going on to help.
Seniors have been working on their final project for AP Government for the past two weeks. Coach Howland chose our partners for this project, encouraging students to work with students that they may not necessarily work with otherwise. Our project is relatively simple, a presentation on one of the amendments of the constitution but with few guidelines and a harsh grading rubric, it was important for us to work hard on the visual aspects and the actual content we presented.
We will showcase our projects after the break, and will be graded both by Coach Howland and our classmates.
The Water Valley High School Band was honored to have Jazz Ambassadors with the U.S. Army Field Band speak with them on Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 19. The guests spoke to band members about playing jazz music, being a musician in the army, and even put on a small performance for the students.
We are so grateful to get an opportunity to listen to guest speakers such as these! Students who did not have excessive tardies or discipline referrals got to enjoy a PBIS reward on last Tuesday afternoon! Our basketball team hosted the North Delta Green Waves in a day game and students could spend their afternoon watching these games.
The Lady Devils played first, suffering an unfortunate loss. The boys team, however, brought the energy from the start! In an exciting game, the boys team was victorious against North Delta, winning 74-57. The cheerleaders were on the court, cheering on our varsity teams. We also performed several parts of our competition routine during half-time of each game. Aaden Reed was named player of the game for the varsity boys.
The basketball teams played multiple times last week, facing North Pontotoc on Thursday evening and Houlka on Friday evening, both at home.
At the Thursday night game, staff hosted a “mental health night” featuring tables with all kinds of resources for those who may be going through tough times. The staff at Water Valley is dedicated to making sure students always have somewhere to turn when they hit a rough spot, and their effort is truly appreciated!
Our Chess Club kicked off last week. Students gathered in Mrs. Ishaquana Martin’s room to learn and play the game of chess. Chess was a big thing at Water Valley a few years ago, so I am glad it is coming back.
Our seventh graders visited the Bob Tyler Fish Hatchery at Enid Lake this week. Students were able to learn about all types of freshwater fish and the daily life of the hatchery. The Visitor Education Center at the Bob Tyler Fish Hatchery provides an educational, entertaining experience that promotes freshwater sport fishing, encourages the conservation and stewardship of aquatic resources, and offers information about the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks.
Our wonderful cafeteria staff provided their annual Thanksgiving lunch! We are so grateful to the staff for making sure students always have a good meal. Speaking of Thanksgiving, students shared what they are thankful for this fall on a big poster in our main foyer. In their passing periods or freetime, students were encouraged to write down what they are thankful for.
With so many answers ranging from family and friends, to pets and fellow students, we expressed our gratitude for the most special things in our lives! I can’t wait to share what students get into during their break! Check back next week to see how students spend their week without school.
