With only days before our Christmas break, students are in the home stretch of the semester this month! Regular assignments are easing up and we have been focused on benchmark testing and final exams.
Softball started off the week with some excitement! Team photos are always a fun bonding experience, getting to dress up in uniform and look your best. Coach Michael Howland is putting a lot into this team to make sure that they are all prepared for the 2025 season, both from a physical point of view, and an emotional point of view! He is putting a lot of work in to ensure that the team has enough support to play their very best all season.
Basketball had a busy week, full of games! The varsity teams first played at West Tally, taking on the Choctaws on Dec. 10. The girls suffered a tough loss 17-52, and the boys came up short, in a 42-51 game.
On Dec. 12, the varsity teams played again at Vardaman. The Lady Devils had a really tough game, losing 21-72. The boys had yet another close game, barely losing with a 43-48 score. They were back on the court Tuesday, facing Coffeeville.

The Water Valley High School softball team are excited about their upcoming season. They took team photos last week.
Student council has kept up with their 10 days of Christmas at WVHS. Students received cards as they entered school on Monday morning, Dec. 9. They were instructed to fill the cards out and swap with one another to spread some Christmas cheer!
On Tuesday, students were informed about the “garland of good deeds.” In a competition between grades, students filled out slips of paper, anonymously detailing a good deed they completed that day. The seniors and juniors found themselves in a close tie, both with over 40 links on their garland. Because of this, the competition continued throughout the week, continuing the chain of good deeds.
Wednesday saw the halls full of reindeer ears as people dressed up as one icon of Christmas! Thursday, students and staff were encouraged to wear fun Christmas sweaters and bells. Friday was a classic student council tradition during the holidays! We made and served hot chocolate with cookies during lunch for all the students. People came by and grabbed themselves a cup and chose from a variety of cookies to enjoy during their break from class. Friday was also, of course, the Water Valley Christmas parade!
Between different sports and activities outside of school, tons of students had the opportunity to participate in the parade. It was tons of fun to participate in too, and I was lucky enough to be on an early float and have an opportunity to go back and watch the rest of the parade with my family.
On Saturday, some students took on the ever-challenging ACT test. This test is important for many reasons for students here in Water Valley. The most important reason, of course, would be for college applications! While many schools in the area are test-optional, and do not require an ACT or SAT score to consider an application, these scores are still important for scholarships.
Certain scores can result in an automatic merit scholarship for students that can be vital when it comes to decision time for college. Many seniors including me have taken the test multiple times, just to ensure we get the absolute best score possible!
Saturday was also exciting for junior band member, Skylar Jordan. Skylar was selected to perform at the Mississippi Band Directors Association Honor Band. She was able to perform with musicians from all over the state in an awesome concert on Saturday.
Students are down to the final days before break and I can’t wait to write about what everyone gets into before Christmas!
