It was another great week in the Valley, as last week was our first full week back from winter break! We have slowly but surely gotten back into a routine of assignments, studying, and test taking! We have so much going this week as well.
Powerlifting season is really gearing up! The boys’ powerlifting team placed third overall at their meet in Ripley at the beginning of the week. Both the girls and boys teams competed at Oxford High School, with the girls lifting on Friday night and the boys lifting on Saturday morning. Though neither team placed, we are still proud of the hard work they have put in so far this season! They have many more meets to come, and I can’t wait to see their improvement.
The junior high Lady Devils basketball team has had quite the eventful week too! For the first time ever, they entered the MHSAA Middle School Invitational! The tournament was held at East Mississippi Community College, and starting on Friday. Davidson Elementary held a send-off walkthrough for the team before they headed to Scooba. In a hard-fought battle against Riverview Middle School, the Lady Devils came out on top for their first match-up, winning 28-27 against the Panthers. In the second round, the girls faced-Corinth Middle School Saturday afternoon.
Unfortunately, the Lady Devils fell short and lost the game, ending their season. Though they could not advance in the tournament, the team had a stellar season with a 15-3 record!
Coach Howard has a message for everyone in the community who supported the junior high squad on this journey. “Sorry we could not get the win, but look how far we have come. Words cannot express how proud I am of this group of young ladies! Since fourth and fifth grade, these girls have put in a ridiculous amount of hours into learning the game of basketball, dedicated themselves to this program, and trusting the process. They have no reason to hang their head down. These ladies made a name for themselves and their community. Hear me when I say this, Remember their names. This is not the end, but the beginning of something special! I love each and every one of my girls. Thank you to their parents, WV administration, WV faculty, and the family and friends who have supported us through it all!”
These girls have made impressive growth during the past two seasons, and they are only going to get better with time!
Our Students of the Month are John McMinn and Samari Carr. Aerial Phillips and Paisley Blakely were named Most Improved Student of the Month!
We also rewarded honor roll students on Friday with cookies and punch for their hard work in the classroom over the second nine weeks!
We had Martin Luther King Jr. Day off from school, and in honor of the great Dr. King, Mrs. Montague’s students researched their favorite quote of his and completed an art project to go along with it. Using various techniques, high school students John Kevin Shipp and Jordin Marion created an absolutely amazing portrait of Dr. King that was hung in the main hallway alongside their quote of choice!
I am always amazed with the way teachers who have a subject such as art manage to tie in important history into their lessons! Mrs. Corso always did an awesome job with this when I took her class. I am not in Mrs. Montague’s class, I have heard nothing but great things about it from her students.
With so many events coming up – dances, the beauty review, and all the sports – the halls of WVHS will be as busy as ever, and I will have all of it to share!
