Welcome back to Inside the Blue and White! It’s been another good week in the Valley filled with athletics! Archery, softball, and baseball have both started out their season with senior pictures. Senior banner photos are such a special way to recognize athletes that have dedicated themselves to their sports.
Baseball senior banners will hang outside of the locker room, softball banners will hang on the exterior of the home field and archery banners will hang inside the high school gymnasium. These sports come last in the school year, and I look forward to seeing how they play out!
Our basketball teams had multiple district games last week, facing off at Bruce for their first game on Tuesday. The Lady Devils fought hard, but fell short against the Trojans in a 56-68 matchup. The Water Valley varsity boys left with a big win, defeating Bruce with a final score of 82-48. The teams also hosted Ingomar in games at home on Friday evening. Varsity girls and boys both suffered unfortunate losses against the Falcons. The girls game ended with a final score of 19-63, and the boys game ended with a final score of 40-54.
Going into this week, the team is gearing up for senior night against MS Palmer, and practicing hard for the district tournament, that will be hosted at home Feb. 4 – 7.
Seniors have met with Mr. Barnes (counselor) and Mrs. Ayers (career coach) a few times in order to prepare for upcoming senior events! We are getting ready to head into job shadowing on February 3. Seniors have been matched up with local professionals who have similar careers as their job of interest. We will spend a few hours shadowing these professionals as they work, in order to learn more about what these careers take. We will also be putting together a presentation about each of these jobs to present to the junior high students in our own job fair!
We’ve also been discussing our upcoming mock-interviews. Each student will participate in a mock job interview that we will be graded on. This is in an effort to help us prepare for future employment opportunities, and the most appropriate ways to hold ourselves during interviews. I personally appreciate both of these opportunities a lot, and I really hope to learn a lot from the chance to participate in these events.
Student council is putting in the work this week to finalize all the details for the WVHS beauty review! This has been one of my absolute most-favorite event we’ve gotten to put on over the years. It is a lot of fun to participate with a night of dressing up and getting to be in the spotlight.
We’ve invested a lot of work into this event since we scheduled it in October. With a few new awards this year, I think it’s going to be a lot of fun. We’ve been finalizing our stage decor and schedules. We’ve also done something new this year and enlisted the help of local businesses to put together a basket of goods for the queens of each of our two divisions. In exchange for a donation, businesses can be recognized during the event as a sponsor! If anyone would like to help us out, please reach out to jcarwile@wvsdschools.com. The support means a lot to us!
Student council members are also been working closely in partnership with the Junior Auxiliary to put on the annual Valentine’s Day Dance for seventh through 10th grade students. Since juniors and seniors have prom, we put on this dance for younger students. We have been working on decorations, location, food, and tickets to make it a special night! With so many events coming up here soon, it’s sure to be a busy few weeks here, with so much to write about!
