WATER VALLEY – A flurry of activity in the waning days of the qualifying period last week almost doubled the number of candidates seeking political office in Water Valley.
The list of candidates who qualified last week includes incumbent Ron Hart, who is running as an independent for a second term in Ward One. Hart will face independent candidate and political newcomer Joseph “Joe” Magnuson. The race will be on the general election ballot on June 3.
In Ward Two, incumbent Freddie Folson and Demetrius Derel Ingram qualified last week, bringing the total number of candidates seeking this position to three after Fred White also qualified earlier in January. Folson and Ingram and running as Democrats and will be on the primary ballot on April 1. The winner of the Democrat Primary will face White in the general election on June 3.
In Ward Three, political newcomer Grant Thompson qualified as an independent and is unopposed.
In Ward Four, Woodrow Wilson Daniels, III, qualified late last week as a Democrat and will run against incumbent Nicole Folson, who qualified as an independent. The race will be on the general election on June 3.
In the alderman-at-large position, Terry L. Allen, Jr. qualified to run as an independent and will challenge incumbent Herbert Alan Rogers, who is also running as an independent.
Incumbent mayor Tommy Reynolds is running unopposed for the city’s top elected position. Reynolds qualified as an independent.
In Oakland, Town Clerk Margaret Suggs reported the candidates who submitted qualifying paperwork had not been certified at presstime Tuesday. In Coffeeville, a spokesperson in the town clerk’s office also said the candidates had not been certified.
The deadline to qualify was Jan. 31.
