WATER VALLEY – Voter turnout could be critical in the bid for Ward 2 alderman in the only contested race on the ballot next Tuesday. Incumbent Freddie Folson and Demetrius Ingram will be on the Democratic Primary ballot for Ward 2. Four years ago only 102 voters cast a ballot in a similar election where Ward 2 was the only race on the ticket.
The winner of Tuesday’s primary for Ward 2 will face independent candidate Fred White in the General Election on June 3.
A second race is also on the Democratic ballot on April 1. Woodrow Daniels, III, is running unopposed for the Democratic nomination for Ward 4. Daniels will advance to the June 3 General Election and he will face incumbent Nicole Folson. She is running as an independent.
The city clerk’s office will be open Saturday, March 29 from 8 a.m. until noon for absentee voting for the Democratic Primary. Saturday is also the deadline to cast an in-person absentee ballot.
The polls will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. on April 1. The Ward 2 precinct is located at the Casey Jones Railroad Museum at the corner of South Main and Blackmur Drive. The Ward 4 precinct is located at the police and fire department at 1001 Community Park Drive.
All of the remaining municipal positions in Water Valley, Coffeeville and Oakland will be on the June 3 General Election Ballot. Contested races in Water Valley include Ward One Aldermen, where incumbent Ron Hart and political newcomer Joseph “Joe” Magnuson are both running as independents. In the alderman-at-large position, incumbent Herbert Alan Rogers and Terry L. Allen, Jr. will be on the ballot.
In Ward Three, political newcomer Grant Thompson is unopposed. Incumbent Ward Three Alderwoman Bonnie Cox did seek re-election. Mayor Tommy Reynolds is also unopposed
In Coffeeville and Oakland, all candidates are running as independents and will appear on the General Election ballot on June 3. In the mayoral race in Coffeeville, incumbent William Shelton will face Brenda Cartwright and Brad Ayers. In other Coffeeville positions, incumbent Rhonda Spearman is unopposed for Ward One Alderman. In Ward 2, incumbent Sonya Murray will face Nakia “Kia” Shelton. In Ward 3, incumbent Eddie Brewer is unopposed. In Ward Four, Kimitria Smith and Keith Canterbury are on the ballot. In the bid for Alderman-at-large, Michael Cook, Stanford Spearman and Kelvin Booker will be on the ballot.
In Oakland, Stephanie Patterson and Robert Jenkins qualified to run for mayor after longtime incumbent James Riley Swearengen did not seek re-election. Patterson currently serves as an alderwoman.
Candidates for alderman or alderwoman are incumbents Marzet Bland, Terry Ellis, Joe W. Jenkins and Sharonda Jones.
Former alderman George Booker is also a candidate, as are political newcomers Keontovious Clinton, Terry Crowder, Kenneth “Bud” Leland and Latonya Richardson Sayle. There are no wards in Oakland, and the top five vote-getters are elected to serve as an alderman or alderwoman.
There is no run-off for the General Election on June 3, and the top vote-getter is the winner. The deadline for new voters to register to vote in this election is Saturday, May 3.
