Welcome back to Inside the Blue and White! It’s been an exciting week in the halls of WVHS, with so much going on for students to enjoy. Archery had a big week, taking on North Half and hosting their first ever senior night! The team finished second overall in the 1A division, securing a slot to compete in the upcoming state championship.
The team shot their best score of the season, 3,246, with top female archer Lillien White (senior) shooting a 290 and top make archer Robert Webb (freshman) shooting a 277. On Thursday night, the team honored their seniors in a senior recognition ceremony, setting new records while they were at it! Senior team members are Mallory Tidwell, Jade Crenshaw, Alexis Kordik, Calicia Hutchins, Lillien White, Maverick French and Heath Wrenn.

Members of the high school annual staff attended the MSPA Spring Journalism Convention at the University of Mississippi last week.
Our students and staff of the month were recognized. Mr. Dean Jones was selected as Teacher of the Month and Mrs. Sharon Jenkins was selected Staff of the Month. Alijah Pegues (high school) and LynnLeighn Barr (junior were chosen as Student of the Month. Jacob Stacy (high school) and Dekorrius Johnson (junior high) were selected as Most Improved Student of the Month.
The eighth graders and sophomores were awarded with cookies and ice cream for having the highest attendance. Coach Howland held volleyball tryouts, already making big plans for next season’s team. Students conditioned and practiced drills, working hard to show off their best skills.
Our biggest events of the week took place throughout the weekend! The boys powerlifting team traveled to Jackson for the State Powerlifting Meet, and they found a lot of success! The team finished third overall, ending their season on a high note. Miles Buford placed second in the 165 pound weight class, and Drake Mabary finished first for the 148 pound weight class!
I asked Drake what he felt was his biggest challenge getting to this point in the season.
“My biggest challenge was overcoming my mind. It was my biggest enemy last year, something that kept me from success,” he responded, “But this year, I kept God with me the whole way, and that is how I prevailed over those challenges,” Drake said.
I also asked Drake what it felt like to be able to overcome those challenges to win the state title. He answered, “It feels very exciting, and I am so proud of myself and my coaches for pushing me. But at the end of the day, it wasn’t just me doing the lifting. Throughout my whole season, God was the one uplifting me to get this far and achieve this goal. God’s will be done.”
On Friday, the Water Valley High School Annual Staff attended the annual MSPA Spring Journalism convention at Ole Miss. Students had the opportunity to hear from all kinds of speakers in different breakout sessions, including WVTA Meteorologist Matt Laubhan! It was a great opportunity to learn new skills to better the yearbook and all that comes with it!
On Thursday morning, the Water Valley Police Department gathered juniors and seniors for a presentation on drunk driving, with a staged scene to show the dangers of drinking of driving before the prom.

Miles Buford earned a second place finish in the 165 pound weight class at the state championship meet.
Then on Saturday, students had the opportunity to get all dressed up for the prom held that night! Rain wasn’t going to stop such an exciting event. As tradition goes, juniors and seniors met at the bandstand with all their friends and family to take pictures before the big event. Shortly afterwards, the group took off to Oxford where prom was being held at The Powerhouse.
Students walked the red carpet, and had a “night in Hollywood” as they danced and enjoyed themselves. Deneshia Spearmen was named prom queen, and Dezmond Campbell was named prom king! Thank you to senior parents for helping make prom happen.
