Railroaders Invited To Historical Society Meeting
Railroading is a big part of the history of Yalobusha County the Yalobusha County Historical Society would like to recognize and honor railroaders during the monthly meeting. This month marks the 125th anniversary of Casey Jones’ wreck at Vaughan, Miss. and the historical society is inviting former railroaders to attend the April 17 meeting.
“If a family member was a railroader and you want to remember him or her, please join us,” invites YHS member Barron Caulfield. “We will include women who worked, either as part of a train crew or an office position. We don’t know of any women in this area who worked as part of a train crew but there may be some,” Caulfield added.
Former railroad employees Larry Bell and Willie Pullen will attend the meeting to share stories about their careers.
“We hope others will attend and share something about their railroad careers. This might include when you started, how long you worked, which railroad or railroads you worked for, the run you liked least, the boss or fellow employee you want to remember, a near miss, or anything you want to share,” Caulfield said.
Former railroaders are urged to attend, even if they don’t want to share about their careers. If you plan to attend, you can contact YHS at the email address below or just show up. If you live too far away to make the trip but would like to participate, send your story to the organization by emailing ychshistory @gmail.com or by mail (by April 10) to YCHS, PO Box 258, Coffeeville, MS 38922.
The meeting will be held at 2 p.m. on April 17 in the former Presbyterian Church on Depot Street in Coffeeville.
