Elizabeth Wright invites the public to dig in for a week of activities to celebrate National Garden Week.
Water Valley is celebrating National Garden Week June 1 through June 7 with a full slate of activities that invite the community to dig in – literally – and enjoy the beauty of gardening, nature, and neighborly fun. Organized by project chairman Elizabeth Wright of the Water Valley Town and Country Garden Club, the week includes something for everyone, from seed giveaways and school garden projects to crafts, talks, plant swaps, and even a trail celebration complete with hotdogs and watermelon.
The week kicks off on Monday, June 2, with the appearance of special boxes at various local stores. Inside, you’ll find free pollinator-friendly seed packets to take home and plant. Each box also has a donation slot for those who wish to support the Garden Club’s community beautification projects.
On Tuesday, June 3, Elizabeth Wright will meet with Alexe van Beuren at Davidson Elementary School to deliver milkweed plants and seeds for the school garden. Milkweed is an important host plant for monarch butterflies, and this donation helps introduce young gardeners to the importance of pollinators and native plants.
Wednesday, June 4, brings a fun and hands-on morning of creativity. At 10 a.m., anyone interested is invited to come make pollinator “sow-and-throws” at the Odd Fellows building. These little seed balls can be tossed into gardens or green spaces where they’ll grow into flowers that attract bees and butterflies. Supplies, snacks, and drinks will be provided. Participation is free, but space is limited to the first 15 people to arrive. The Garden Club extends a big thank you to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows for sharing their space for this activity.
Thursday, June 5, features two events. At 1 p.m., the MSU Yalobusha 4H Extension Building in Coffeeville will host a Container Gardening Talk led by Missy Burney, Lisa Kimbrough, and Debbie Brooks. This informative session will cover how to garden in small spaces and containers, and is perfect for beginners or anyone with a porch, patio, or windowsill garden. Snacks and drinks will be served, courtesy of the Garden Club, and special thanks go to the 4H program for providing the venue.
Later that evening, at 6:30 p.m., Rod Mazzone will lead a Paperback Flower Making Class at This is Noteworthy (TIN). Open to participants ages 10 and up, the class costs $5 and includes all craft materials, along with snacks and drinks provided by the Garden Club. These lovely handmade flowers are a creative way to bring some bloom indoors, and the club is grateful to TIN for opening their doors at 16 South Main for this workshop.
Saturday, June 7, is a big day for garden lovers, nature fans, and community members alike. From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., there will be a Plant Swap table set up at the Water Valley Farmers Market in Railroad Park. Hosted by market manager Lara O’Neal and co-sponsored by the Garden Club and Yalobusha Greenway Alliance, the swap invites visitors to bring a plant and take a plant. There will be plants on the table to start things off, and information will be available about how to get involved with both sponsoring organizations.
Also on Saturday morning, the Garden Club will take part in a special celebration of National Trails Day with the Yalobusha Greenway Alliance. Events will take place from 9 a.m. to noon, with parking available on South Court Street beside the bridge behind the old Defer’s Service Station. The Garden Club will have a table offering cold water, watermelon slices, and information on how to support both the club and YGA’s trail efforts. The trail day schedule includes a quarterly recap at 9:00 a.m., a bird walk with Rebecca Ifshin at 9:30, a plant walk with Katelynn Dillard at 10:15, and a free lunch of hotdogs, hamburgers, chips, and watermelon at 11.
National Garden Week is the perfect opportunity to slow down, appreciate nature, and celebrate the ways gardening brings people together. Whether you’re planting seeds, crafting flowers, learning about containers, or walking the trails, there’s something blooming for everyone in Water Valley this week.
