TUPELO – Water Valley High School graduates Ezaryon “Bug” Riley and Hayden Schurr represented Water Valley in the 13th Annual Northeast Mississippi Football Coaches Association (NEMFCA) All-Star Classic on the South Team. The South was narrowly defeated, 19-14, by the North Team in an instant classic played at Tupelo High School on May 12.
The All-Star game featured more than 100 players from schools in the northern part of the state. According to NEMFCA board of directors member Richard Russo, this event is a way to highlight football players in this area.
“A lot of times, kids north of Jackson, kind of get overlooked in some of the Mississippi Association of Coaches all-star games. So, the intent was to get them some exposure from northeast Mississippi schools,” Russo said.
Water Valley Blue Devil head football coach Clint Faust was proud to watch Schurr and Riley compete in the game.
“It was fun, they both got a lot of playing time. They are probably two of our hardest working seniors that we have had throughout the year. I was proud to see them go play and represent Water Valley one more time,” coach Clint Faust reported.
Faust also said that the game was a defensive struggle, similar to many all star games.
“You are not going to see a lot of offensive light shows, just because they don’t have time to prepare,” Faust said.
The game came down to the final play, a Hail Mary that was dropped in the end zone.
“The kid had it in his hands and when he came down with it the ball popped it,” Faust added.
