If you’ve ever pulled an old Watermelon Carnival t-shirt from a drawer, you already know – it’s not just a shirt. It’s a memory. Soft, faded, maybe with a stubborn corn dog mustard stain or two—it’s living proof you were there at the Street Dance, when the fireworks lit up the sky, the Carnival program made the perfect fan, and the lemonade was cold and sweet and absolutely perfect.
Carnival shirts are a little like watermelon seeds—there’s lots of them. Most folks in Water Valley have at least one. Some have a pile. And if you’ve been collecting for years, you could probably string yours into a clothesline across Main Street.
This year’s shirt is a keeper. The 2025 design from Robby Ferguson celebrates the theme “From the Vine to the Valley”—a simple phrase that says a lot. It’s about our roots. The literal ones in the soil that grow the melons we’re famous for and also have state records for, and the deeper ones that connect neighbor to neighbor, generation to generation.
The shirts are $20 each and come in Youth Small through Youth Large, and Adult Small through 4XL. You can get yours now at the Water Valley Area Chamber of Commerce office, and if you need a little style inspiration, Watermelon Queen Mya Harden is proudly showing off this year’s look.
For those who already own a few Carnival shirts, you know how fun they are to collect. Every year brings a new design—and with it, a new memory. There’s the one from the year it poured rain during the Street Dance. The one with the retro truck piled high with watermelons. The one your kid wore until the sleeves gave out. Each shirt tells a story.
These shirts go places, too. We’ve seen them at the lake, the grocery store, out walking dogs, even in Christmas card photos. They’re weekend uniform, porch-sitting apparel, and a favorite go-to when you need something easy and familiar. Some folks have turned them into quilts, some frame them, and a few creative souls have stitched theirs into tote bags and pillows.
What makes the shirts special isn’t just the artwork—it’s the feeling you get when you put one on. You’re not just dressing for comfort. You’re wearing a piece of tradition. It says you were there. You showed up. You cheered at the watermelon drop, browsed the crafts, maybe even danced a little (or a lot) in the street. And whether it’s your first Carnival or your 50th, the shirt ties you into the story.
This year’s design blends tradition with fresh style, honoring the agricultural roots of our community while celebrating the joy that ripens here every August. It’s a reminder that something as simple as a watermelon—or a t-shirt—can connect us in the sweetest ways.
So don’t wait. Stop by the Chamber office and pick yours up before they’re gone. Every year, someone tells us they meant to grab one and missed out. We hate hearing that. Because once they’re gone, they’re gone.
From the Vine to the Valley—and now to your closet. Add this year’s shirt to your collection and wear it with pride. The countdown to Carnival is on, and we’ll be there with music, melons, and memories in the making.
