WATER VALLEY – It’s not every day you see a youth director dangling from the sky with a guitar—but that’s exactly what happened at First Christian Church’s Vacation Bible School (VBS) last Wednesday, June 25.
First Christian Church Youth Director Lexi Fowler promised to face her fear of heights and perform in a city bucket truck towering over the church on North Main Street – if the kids could raise $3,000 for this year’s VBS mission.
The goal?
Supporting Sonshine Christian Camp in Baldwyn, a camp for children and youth to grow closer in their walks with Jesus. Each summer, First Christian Church sends several groups of children to this camp. Fowler explained that it has been tradition for the church’s youth director to do something a little crazy at the end of VBS if a certain amount of money has been brought in for the offering,
Midway through the week, the offering total was lagging and Lexi thought she might keep both feet safely on the ground. But the VBS attendees came though, raising just over $3,000 by week’s end.
Lexi climbed into the bucket truck, guitar in hand, and was hoisted high above the crowd. From the sky, she led the children in a spirited rendition of “Your Way’s Better” by Forrest Frank—one of the week’s favorite songs. Below her, the kids danced and sang along, thrilled to see their director go above and beyond – literally – for their cause.
First Christian Church extends special thanks to the City of Water Valley; Electric Department Superintendent Brandon Richardson and Michael Richardson, and the Water Valley Police Department for helping make the high-flying finale a heavenly success.
