Over 300 people waited in line for Fred’s Family Store to open on Sept. 25, 1975. The new store was the largest store in the entire Fred’s chain.
20 Years—September 22, 2005 – Teachers and administrators were honored for Water Valley Schools achieving a Level Five Certification. They enjoyed a steak lunch at Davidson Elementary and the High School. Joe Black and Snooky Williams helped coordinate the meal. Cooks were Charles McCullar, Brad Brooks, Grey and Kathy Williams.
Star Students were named at Davidson Elementary. Kindergarten Stars were Jarah Spence, Sidney Kimzey, Janie Owen, Aijah Turner, and NiQuisha Woodard.
Open House was held at the new O’Tuckolofa parsonage. Hosting the event were Bro. Dan and Susan Dickerson and daughter, Sara Beth, entertained the young ladies in her room.
Sports Editor William Browning’s game account led with the statement that the Blue Devils recorded their first loss of the season to Calhoun City.
Mayor Bill Norris, in partnership with Cornerstone Rehabilitation, proclaimed October as Physical Therapy Month. Cornerstone employees were David Ferguson, owner Steve Thompson, Craig Webb, and Jennifer McGavock.
30 Years—September 21, 1995 – Ethel Morgan opened a new shoe store on Main Street in Water Valley.
The Lafayette Commodores barely defeated Water Valley in a heart-breaking game by the score of 14-12. Running Back Chris Harris put the first score on the board for the Devils.
Andrea Dawn Davis and Lance Clement were united in marriage June 10, 1995.
Cheerleader Tanya Odom was featured in Gurner Photographer’s ad for uniform photos.
Water Valley native, Paul Haynes, was inducted into the Hall of Fame at Holmes Community College.
The Chamber of Commerce sponsored Octoberfest was planned for October 7.
Nycole Campbell is an Honor Student at Mississippi Southern University.
Howard Shere, president of Green Dragon Creatives, has placed an innovative plan in place, which will make access to the internet cheaper and easier in the Valley.
Deaths reported were for James M. Brown, Willie M. Tatum, Mary A. Allen, William Ray Gean, Arthur Wade Shaw, Glyn Floyd Brooks, Mary Nell Nichols, and Dorothy Williamson.
40 Years—September 26, 1985 – In a hard fought game, the Blue Devils were able to hold arch rival, Senatobia, to just 23 points, even though they came up on the short end of a 23-0 score.
Mayor Hamric Henry was appointed to the Executive Committee of the State Municipal Association.
Toxey Fortenberry was inducted into Omega Tau Rho, an honorary realtor fraternity.
Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Trusty celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
Col. Lloyd White gave an interesting talk at the Yalobusha Historical Society’s meeting recently, giving an account of his service with the American Dependents School in Turkey during World War II.
Jim Pittman was leaving for a mission assignment in Belgium, Pakistan and India.
Staff Sgt. L.C. Walls, son of John and Hattie Walls, was decorated at his Philippine Post. He was a 1973 graduate of Water Valley High School.
50 Years—September 25, 1975 – Water Valley dropped a hard fought 20-7 decision to the visiting unbeaten Senatobia Warriors, to bring their record to 1-2 for the year.
Dr. Louis Andrew Jones, Jr. received his D.D.S. degree from the University of Tennessee School of Dentistry September 21, 1975.
Larry Prestage’s hound placed second and Butch Surrette’s dog placed fourth in the Enid Lake Field Trials.
Mr. and Mrs. Lebron Moorhead celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
The Homemaker’s Corner, written by Extension Home Economist Mamie Shields, urged everyone to be a wise manager while utilizing time and energy.
60 years—September 23, 1965 – The Blue Devils defeated one of the toughest teams on their schedule, Holly Spring, 27-7, after being held scoreless in the first half. The Devils had scored 97 points on the season, while giving up only seven.
Among Junior Auxiliary members involved in a music project for Water Valley Elementary School students were Beverly Strode and Mary Lou (Harold) Williams. They were pictured while instructing Terry Warren, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Warren; Sherry Ingram, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Ingram; and Candy Walker, daughter of Sgt. and Mrs. W. D. (Buddy) Walker.
Bonnie Cox was a member of the Northwest Misses, a precision marching and dance group of Northwest Jr. College. They were seen in action at Senatobia, when the Southwest Bears invaded.
70 Years—September 22, 1955 – The Tomorrow’s Men & Women Column included: Deborah Ann Snider, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Snider; Steven Michael Ragan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Benny Ragan; Stephen Alan Williamson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Billy B. Williamson; Scott McMinn, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis McMinn; and Wanda Davis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. S. Davis.
Danny Ross Ingram, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Ingram, made a fine showing in the Jr. Beef Show at the Tri-Lake Fair & Livestock Show.
From Myrle Cox’ Just Rambling Column came: “Little Ed” (Ed Shearer, III) dropped in yesterday for a short visit with home folks. He was on his way from Wisconsin going back to duty at Camp Carson, Colo.
The Rice-Stix Company, major industry in Water Valley, is now under new ownership.
80 Years—September 27, 1945 – Mayor F. B. DeShon asks opinion of Water Valley citizens on State BAWI Directors’ plan for industrial development.
Co-hostesses for B- Natural Music Club meeting were Frances Ann Stogner, Bessie Mae Mize, Pat Eudaly, and Zora Belle Early.
The “Tri-Club,” a recently organized Rook Club, met with Janie Lou White, with Mrs. William Albert Hyde as co-hostess.
The Grand Theater was showing “The Story of G. I. Joe.”
News of Men in Uniform: Sgt. Harvey K. Tillman of Tillatoba, reported missing over France in 1943, now reported dead.
Cpt. John S. Throop, Jr. recently reported for duty with the Quartermaster Corps, Utah ASF Depot.
