The 1975 gubernatorial election was heating up and leading candidates Cliff Finch and Gil Carmichael made campaign stops in Water Valley. Finch (above) is pictured with supporters at the Water Valley courthouse during an October visit. Finch won the election with 52 percent of the vote.

10 Years—October 22, 2015 – Representative Tommy Reynolds asks for your vote on November 3. Reynolds pledges that if he returns to the capitol, you will be assured of the same hard-working, dedicated and forward-thinking representation that he provides during his time in office.
Water Valley resident Mickey Howley wrote a letter to the editor in favor of adopting the unit system. “This beat versus unit road situation may not seem like a big deal, but the unit system is that incremental improvement in governing that has long-term positive effects for everybody,” Howley wrote.
Water Valley native Terry Warren is renovating two buildings he purchased on Main Street, the former Wagner building and the connecting building on the north side. He plans to build on the success of Water Valley’s Main Street with a destination-style business, citing a bar and grill as one possibility. He is also adamant that his venture will compliment the existing business climate. The renovation is expected to be completed by mid-2016.
20 Years—October 20, 2005 – George Roberts, a Yalobusha County resident since 1949, celebrated his 100th birthday October 17, 2005. In a story, written by Herald columnist, William Browning, it was stated that Mr. Roberts was born in Bryant, farmed for over 70 years, working for Ross Ingram and on the Adams farm. He also played organized baseball in Water Valley, and was an excellent pitcher. He stated the other teams wanted to kill him to get him out of the games.
Supervisors and Sheriff Steve Shuffield were hard at trying to keep the county jail fit to house inmates.
New members of the Lions Club were Pierce Epes, Vicki Byer, Sandy Byer, and Bill Hurst.
Obits reported were: Anna Eleanor Nichols Hodges of Water Valley; J. D. Lewis of Water Valley; Nonus “Pat” Whisenant of Banner; Hubert Floyd Massey of Bruce; Loraine Johnson Chesheir of Ellisville; and John D. Chandler of Grenada.
The Blue Devils remain undefeated with a 28-20 win over the Independence Wildcats, playing in “Death Valley.” Both Ronnie Ferrell and Shannon Crow exceeded the 100-yard mark during the game.
In the “Keep America Beautiful” Poetry Contest winners were: Garrett King, first; Davelin Woodard, second; Cody Greer, third; and Danielle Tidwell, Savanna Welch, and Kistie Beaver, honorable mentions.
30 Years—October 19, 1995 – The Water Valley High School Marching Band participated in the Bruce Invitational Marching Contest. The Color Guard and Drum Major Brent Hollister earned “Superior” ratings, and the percussion section and the band received “Excellent” ratings.
Airman Charlie L. Gordon, son of Charles and Ann Gordon of Water Valley, completed basic training at Lackland AFB in San Antonio,Texas.
40 Years—October 24, 1985 – Ernest P. Aune, president of the Mechanics Bank, announced that Bill Larson had been named a member of the Board of Directors of that institution.
The Blue Devils had their best showing of the season when they defeated the Holly Spring Panthers 20-0. Sophomore QB John Ingram got some play time and made the most of it—tossing TD passed to Bubba Person and Lane Hart.
The Water Valley High School Band received three “Superior” ratings and one “Excellent” rating at the Northwest Mississippi Band Clinic at NWCC in Senatobia. The band received ones for the overall band, Band President, Kevin Herrera, Color Guard, Captain Melinda Henderson, and Drum Major Denise Riley.
The two was for the drum line, Captain Antimo Zampella.
50 Years—October 23, 1975 – Oakland’s Bicentennial Committee was formed with Mrs. William C. Callaway presiding. The affair was scheduled for October 28.
John Watson of Water Valley placed sixth with his hound, Hill Crest Randy’s King, in the White and Cleburne County Fox and Wolf Hunters’ Field Trials.
60 Years—October 21, 1965 – A picture of football fans stacked several deep at the concession stand, being manned by parent volunteers appeared on the front page. The stand was managed by Ludie Appleton and proceeds from the sales benefited the band program.
Army Pvt. Curtis Dennis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dudley Dennis, completed a personnel administration course at Fort Ord, Calif.
The Horn Lake Eagles kept the Blue Devils in doubt of their 14th consecutive win (sixth straight in the Chickasaw Conference) Friday night. The Devils did come out on top with a 7-0 win as the final whistle blew.
70 Years—October 20, 1955 – Mrs. J. M. Colson wins title of “Mrs. Water Valley” in contest sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, held in the City Auditorium. Mrs. Robert Earl Gholson was named first alternate and Mrs. E. L. Lamar was chosen second alternate.
