DES music teacher Mary Freeman led the students in patriotic songs as part of a character program at the school in November, 2005. Participants included (top photo) student council members, Jacob King, Austin Hodge, Molly Van Winkle, Lauren Tyler, Davelin Woodard, Mallory Washington, Cienna Olmstead, Arnisha Phillips, Erica Laundry, DeAndre Jones, Mary Cloud Taylor, Tori Johnson, Shampain Spearman, Coach Shane Brown and Koala Tolbert led the Pledge of Allegiance at the Salute to American Character program.
20 Years—November 24, 2005 – The Mississippi School Board Association recognized Water Valley School District Board Members, Casey Washington, Ray Hawkins, Dr. Barry Weeks, Lamar Burgess, and Phyllis Goodwin, along with Superintendent Sammy Higdon, for the superior student achievement at Davidson Elementary and Water Valley High School. The schools achieved a Level 5 accreditation.
The Lady Blue Devils took first place in the Charleston Basketball Tournament. The Blue Devils finished third.
Helping with the landscaping around the recently added monuments in City Park by the Town and Country Garden Club were Richard Morgan, Ray White, Kilpatrick Boles and William Beard.
30 Years—November 23, 1995 – The Water Valley Blue Devils’ season came to an end Friday night, when Shannon’s Red Raiders shut them out, 28-0.
The WVHS Class of 1934 held a reunion in Milano’s Restaurant in Water Valley. Attending were class members, Marie Axelrod, S. L. Bell, Evelyn Williamson, Alma Hart, Opal Martindale, Dessie Caulfield, Barron Caulfield, Sr., Ludie Appleton, Mildred Harmon, Reba Pennington, and Frances Sessums.
Officers and advisors of the Water Valley High School Student council attended the annual North Mississippi Students Council Workshop. Attending were Yolanda Campbell, Delita Hawkins, Chris Terry, April Link, and Principal Alan Wallace.
40 Years–November 21, 1985 – Cathy King, on behalf of the Pilot Club, presented a check to Betty Melton, librarian, for use of Blackmur Memorial Library.
Vallians Mrs. Earl Nichols, Mrs. Ray Gean, Mrs. Fred Eakes and Mrs. Garlon Maynor attended events honoring Columbus Rebekah Lodge No. 32, in celebration of their 50th anniversary.
VFW Commander James Gordon urged all VFW members to attend the district meeting to be held in Hernando.
Pine Valley Homemakers held their regular monthly meeting in the home of Mrs. Bernard Goodnight. Mrs. Irene Alexander, president, called the meeting to order.
Water Valley Masonic bodies were considering building a new building because their old building on North Main Street has been deemed unsound, due to damage sustained in the 1984 tornado.
The Garden Club of Water Valley met in the country home of Mrs. Leon Harmon. Hostesses were Mrs. Vassar Evans, Mrs. T. O. Gore, Mrs. M.E. Webb and Mrs. E. L. McVey. Discussion was whether to put red cannas in the park areas of the city.
50 Years—November 27, 1975 – All three Blue Devil basketball teams defeated the Lafayette Commodores.
Dennis Sutherland killed his first buck, while hunting off Highway 32.
Births announced were: Jennifer Lane Hall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hall of Water Valley; and Leah Anne Norris, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Norris.
Representing Yalobusha County at the joint district meeting of the Mississippi Municipal Association and the Mississippi Association of Supervisors, held at Northwest Junior College, were Sen. Charles Nix; representative-elect Harry Bryan; supervisors, Richard Ross, Fred Moorman, Doke French and L. D. Jones; Alderman Richard Flowers; and Chancery Clerk Bobby Clark.
The Yalobusha Child Development Group met with President Darriel Koonce presiding. New officers elected were Water Valley Mayor Watson Hunt, president; Mrs. Jimmy Berry, vice-president; Mrs. Margaret Perkins, secretary; and Mrs. Mamie Shields, publicity Chairman.
60 Years—November 25, 1965 – Mrs. Ima Jones, Yalobusha County Health Nurse, used a special needle gun to administer tuberculin tests to grammar school students. She was pictured testing Frankie Green. Also assisting with the testing were Mrs. Harold Williams, Mrs. Paul Strode, and Mrs. Jerry Holmes.
James R. Kisner of Water Valley has been promoted to superintendent of the Big Yank Plant in Wewoka, Oklahoma.
Pictured with the bucks they killed recently were: Larry Carr, four pointer; Bobby Camp, nine pointer; Trent Howell, 10-year-old, with his second kill of the year; and Mrs. Henry Simmons, with an eight-pointer.
The Davidson High School Tigers Basketball Team won their sixth game of the season. High scorers in the games were Jack Cooke and Willie Bland.
70 Years—November 24, 1955 – Sue McCullar, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roland McCullar, and Sonny Sartor, son of Mr. and Mrs. Flake Sartor, were chosen Miss and Mr. Water Valley Junior High School.
Senior Blue Devils, honored at the football banquet, were Bill Harris, Binford Turnage, Charles Goode, Danny Wright and Dale Ashmore. Football award winners were: Charles Larson, Sportsmanship, presented by Harry Fair; Bill Harris, Most Valuable Player, presented by Howard Holloway; George Gafford and Charles Larson, Highest Scholastic Averages, presented by Coach Bob Cire; Dale Ashmore, Most Improved Player, presented by W. C. Quinn; and Danny Wright, Best Blocker, presented by Courtney Simpson.
80 Years—November 29, 1945 – Ernestine French has joined the Southeastern Area Staff of American Red Cross at the AAF Convalescent Hospital, Cochran, Ga., as Hospital Recreation Worker.
Members of the Ringold Deer Hunt Club have returned from their annual camp. Members from Water Valley are C. E. Ringold, J. H. Stewart, Jim Larson, J. P. Hart, Sam White, Fred Duncan, John Taylor and J. A. Ramsey.
Among the “Who’s Who” elected at Jeff Davis were Ruth Newman, Miss JDHS, and Frank Mixon, Mr. JDHS.
Miss Donna Kirkwood became the bride of Norris Harding on Nov. 10, 1945.
Management of Rice-Stix Company from the St. Louis Office were in Water Valley to express their satisfaction of the success of the local plant to a group of city businessmen.
