The Hubert Creekmore Reading Series continues at Bozarts Gallery on Tuesday, January 6, with Water Valley’s own Sally Lott McLellan. A Mississippi native, Sally serves as a volunteer with the Prison Writes Initiative. Since 2021 she has been an instructor in Creative Arts at Parchman and Marshall County Correctional Facility where she guides students in the making of visual and written art pieces which she has curated and shown publicly, most recently at TIN (This is Noteworthy.)
In her 2025 memoir Intersections: Seeking Self at Parchman Prison (VOX Press), Ms. McLellan candidly and lovingly describes the incarcerated men she teaches and how their time together has changed them all. She will read from the memoir and exhibit some of her students’ art works. As she says, in the online magazine Rooted, “I would tear down walls to get more attention to the true rehabilitation of the incarcerated through self-esteem and confidence-building programs. The arts are like magic in giving people a chance to feel good about themselves.” (https://rooted.substack.com/p/mississippi-native-sally -lott-mclellan)
Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; open mic at 6:45 p.m., and featured author begins at 7 p.m. followed by a Q&A. Bozarts Gallery is located at 403 N. Main Street.
There is no charge for the series, but donations are encouraged to support the Hubert Creekmore Reading Series. For more information see creekmorelit.com
