OAKLAND – The Oakland Chamber Foundation has received notification that its Oakland Celebrates America250 project has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Mississippi Humanities Council and the America250 Mississippi Commission.
Oakland’s celebration marking the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence will launch with the Yalo-Ribbon Festival on May 2 and continue through October.
Activities and events will bring together multiple organizations in Oakland to carry out a variety of programs, including a youth-led cemetery cleanup, oral history projects, a time capsule, a Veterans Parade, a July 4 Community Birthday Party, a community reading program, a photo exhibit and a back-to-school celebration, among other activities.
“We are so happy that the Chamber Foundation submitted and received this grant, which will help us celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence 250 years ago. This is not just for the town of Oakland but for our surrounding area, and we hope you will join us for our events,” said Mayor Stephanie Patterson.
Watch for details about upcoming events on the Oakland Area Chamber of Commerce website, in local newspapers and on social media. To volunteer to assist with the celebration, contact oakland areachamber@gmail.com.
