Hey everyone, and welcome back to another week of Inside the Blue and White! Things really picked up around campus with lots activities. From baseball to archery, our athletes and students stayed busy and brought the energy all week long. There were plenty of exciting moments, and I’m excited to share all the highlights with you!
The archery team kicked off the week strong with a home match against Oxford and Regents. Both teams brought tough competition, but our shooters stayed focused and steady. Leading the team were Matthew Surrette with an impressive score of 273 and Adalynn McCluskey close behind with a 270.
On Thursday, the team traveled to Charleston High School for another exciting match. The competition was intense, but Water Valley archers rose to the challenge once again. The top female shooter and overall high scorer was Bella Humphreys with an outstanding 283. The top male shooter of the day was T.J. Nellum, who shot a strong 271.
The momentum continued Friday night with another home match against South Panola. The team kept their rhythm and delivered another successful performance. Once again, Bella Humphreys earned top female and overall honors with a score of 274, while T.J. Nellum claimed top male shooter with a 271.
The boys basketball team traveled to Kemper County on February 21 for the second round of the playoffs. The boys went in focused and determined to win—and they did, earning a strong 59–48 victory. With that win, they advanced to face Northside in the Elite Eight on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Northeast Community College.
Northside proved to be a tough opponent in a close and competitive matchup. By the end of the first quarter, Northside held a narrow 12–11 lead. At halftime, the score stood at 21–15. Our team fought hard throughout the game but ultimately came up just short, falling 48–45. The basketball team finished the season with an impressive record of 18–12 and placed second in the district. This group made history for the program, and we are extremely proud of their dedication, effort, and accomplishments this season.
The baseball team had a busy week on the field, playing four games in just a few days. The week opened with a hard-fought home matchup against Senatobia. The team battled until the final inning but came up just short in a close 11–13 loss. Next, the Blue Devils traveled to Calhoun County for an away game. The final score was unavailable at the time of reporting. During the Prep Baseball Showdown, our Blue Devils faced Alcorn Central in another competitive contest. The players showed determination and grit, but ultimately fell 12–16 after a tough battle. Even with challenging matchups and a demanding schedule, the team continues to gain experience and improve with every game as they prepare for the rest of the season.
The girls dressed to impress for the annual Beauty event, filling the night with elegance and confidence. The competition featured two divisions: junior high and high school, with each participant shining in her own unique way.
The junior high winner was Charlee Golson, while the high school Miss Beauty title was awarded to Kenley Pullen. Both girls represented their categories with grace and poise. Every contestant looked absolutely beautiful, and everyone walked away a winner for showing courage and pride in representing their school.
Two of our talented band students, Cohen Hart and Skylar Jordan, were selected to participate in the Mid-South Honor Band held at the University of Mississippi. Both students represented their school with pride and dedication, delivering an outstanding performance alongside some of the best young musicians in the region.
That wraps up this week’s news inside the halls of Water Valley High School! I am so proud of everyone for their hard work and achievements. With spring break just around the corner and summer approaching fast, excitement is definitely in the air.
