20 Years—March 23, 2006 – Brigadier General Roger Shields, a member of the Mississippi National Guard, was inducted into the Officer Candidate School of Fame, Class of 2006 at Fort Benning, Georgia. This is the highest honor bestowed on an OCS graduate.
Deaths listed in this week’s paper were for: Eula Faye Chandler; Luella Beck Fair; Joyce Lorene Griffin; Janet Marie Person; Mary Louise Shephard Poe; and Sara M. “Mickey” Stella.
Blue Devil Center Fielder Ronnie Ferrell was pictured as he took a swing in a recent home game. He was leading the team in home runs, while also leading in slugging percentages at .775.The Blue Devils remain undefeated in division play.
“A traffic stop by Deputy Sheriff James Bonds resulted in an arrest and seizure of a large amount of the narcotic known as Ice,” stated Sheriff Steve Shuffield.
Water Valley High School was renovating the library following damage by a storm.
30 Years—March 21, 1996 – Janet Dickey was promoted to vice-president of The Peoples Bank & Trust Company, An employee of the Water Valley Branch of the bank, Dickey is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vista Dickey.
J. L. “Pete” Reid was presented a plaque for his years of service as a commissioner of the Soil Conservation Service.
Travis Brooks also received a plaque for his 21 years of service as a commissioner.
Dr. Robert Khayat was the key-note speaker at the annual Water Valley Chamber of Commerce Banquet.
Yalobusha County Historical Society was observing their 20th anniversary. The first officers of the society were: Bruce Gurner, president; Chris B. Morgan, vice-president; and secretary/treasurer was Mrs. Lillian Stebbing. The present president was Tom Moorman.
40 Years–March 27, 1986 – Bennie Cole Taylor, president of the Bank of Water Valley, introduced Yalobusha County Agent Doyle Varner at the second annual Agri-Marketing Seminar, held in Water Valley. The seminar was sponsored by the bank.
Former Governor Cliff Finch was introduced to those attending the program honoring retiring State Supreme Court Justice Kermit Cofer by the Master of Ceremonies, Garlon Maynor.
Bro. Terry Anderson was the speaker for a pre-Easter revival at Water Valley First Christian Church.
Missy Hester, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Hester, and Robert Todd, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Todd, attended the Rotary Youth Leadership Conference, held recently in Olive Branch.
Nicole House, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hubert House, won the Yalobusha County Spelling Bee for the second straight year. She will compete in the Mid-South Spelling Bee to be held in Memphis in April.
50 Years—March 25, 1976 – Wanda Cook, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. M. “Junior” Cook, graduated from Baptist Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Memphis.
James B. “Crip” Tyler was named City Recreational Director by the Executive Board of the Magnolia Youth Baseball League.
The Garden Club of Water Valley has selected the yard of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Litton on Dupuy Street as “Yard of the Month” for March.
Yalobusha County’s ASCS Office has been selected as a winner of a National Award. In Washington to receive this award were Clyde Pace, County Executive Director, and Robert D. Pittman, County Committee Chairman.
Learning the proper method for operating a computer at a training session at Ole Miss were Water Valley High School juniors, David Aune and Doug Gurner.
60 Years—March 24, 1966 – Davidson High School Tigers of Water Valley topped all their previous records by winning the State B-School Basketball Championship. Team members were Jack Cook, Leon Lester, Sylvester Cook, Joe Bailey, Williams Bland, Larry Kuykendall, Sidney Joseph, George Lawrence, Benny Campbell and James Campbell. Coaching the team was Lincoln Shields and the Tigers’ “Queen” was Bessie Hudson.
Water Valley High School Band members, selected as members of the Mississippi Lions Club’s All-State Band were: Jackie Hughes, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Hughes, baritone; and Ronnie Crenshaw, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Crenshaw, bass clarinet.
Cadet Girl Scouts on the PTA Program, directed by Mrs. James B. Tyler, were Camille Fly, Denise Chittom, Nancy Brook Tyler, Jane Henry, Ginger Allen, Mary Jane Harding, Cindy Ashford, Ruth Throop, Susan Hunsicker and Marjorie Dell Mayo.
70 Years—March 22, 1956 – Enid Lake fishing was good. Yalobusha County Sportsmen’s Club president, W. G. “Red” Cotton, and his wife, Janice, caught 15 good bass, averaging two pounds. They were fishing near Robinson’s Crossing.
Another report of great fishing at Robinson’s Crossing was by J. B. Massie with a larger stringer of bass, all topping the two pound mark.
80 Years—March 21, 1946 – Enid Dam will require 41,000 acres of land, lying in Yalobusha, Lafayette and Panola Counties. It’s estimated building cost would be $10,000,000. The dam was to be built on the Yocona River, about 12 miles west of Water Valley.
Water Valley merchants have decided to close businesses on Thursday afternoons.
A 4-H Club Rally was held in the Grand Theatre. The program included: Call to Order, Judyth Kuykendall, Oakland; Invocation, Mr. Q. T. Crowson, Coffeeville; Introductory Remarks, Mr. Eddie Blackmur, Water Valley; Group Singing led by Miss Maxine Naughter, Assistant State Girls’ 4-H Club Agent; Welcome, Mr. Herman White, Superintendent of Education; Response, Frank Stewart, Coffeeville; Recognition of Guests, Robert Lawshe, Water Valley; Roll Call, Gilda Lynn Jones, Jeff Davis; Program, “Treasurer Chest”, Mr. O.V. Newman and the Jeff Davis Club.
News of “Men and Women in Uniform”: Barney Pullen, S 1-c, returned to civilian life through the Navy Personnel Separation Center in Memphis, after being in the Navy for 27 months, 21 of them being sea duty; Rayford Edgar, SM 1-c, discharged from the Navy at the Millington Separation Center after being in the Navy for 33 months, with 25 months of sea duty; Andrew Potts, with U.S. Armed Forces on the island of New Caldedonia, promoted to Technician Grade Five while serving in the South Pacific.
