Youth Melon Contest Sign-Up Is April 17-18
YALOBUSHA — Registration and seed pickup for the 3rd Annual Largest Watermelon Contest will be held Friday, April 17, at the Extension Office in Coffeeville and Saturday, April 18, from 10 to 11 a.m. across from Larson’s Cash Saver in Water Valley.
Yalobusha County 4-H is partnering with the Water Valley Area Chamber of Commerce for the contest, which is open to ages 6 to 18.
The weigh-in will be held in August during the Watermelon Carnival, and it will soon be time to plant.
MSU Extension Agent Missy Burney reports that seeds will be provided for each contestant, along with fertilizer and growing instructions during registration.
“Using seeds from the same variety ensures we have a level playing field,” Burney said.
Almost a dozen young competitors participated in last year’s event, and organizers are hoping for even more this year.
