20 Years—April 20, 2006, Jack Gurner, Sr., curator of the Water Valley Casey Jones Railroad Museum, was pictured as he showed Karl Teller, Hobo King for 2002-03, the site of the former Casey Jones Museum in Vaughn. Teller was in Water Valley for a weekend hobo gathering.
The Water Valley Blue Devils Baseball team, the number one seed in the district, was hosting the number two seed, Booneville, number three seed, Byhalia, and number four seed, Corinth, in the playoffs.
The Pioneer Leadership Award was presented to Mrs. Ruthie White, Yalobusha County Purchase Clerk.
Yalobusha County Homemakers attending the North Central Mississippi Area Volunteers Homemaker Meeting included Joy Tippit, Pat Brooks, Carol Whitsett, Jane Franklin, Betty Baker, Doris Hunt, Jesse Williams, and Frances Adkins.
Teri Adams was a member of the Northwest Mississippi Community College Rodeo Team.
30 Years—April 18, 1996 – Five generations of the family of Mrs. Sallie Potts, age 90 and a resident of Yalobusha County Nursing Home, were pictured. With her were her daughter, Margaret Gean; granddaughter, Pam Gean Williams; great-granddaughter, Nikki Williams Welch; and great-great-grandson, Joshua Welch.
Mrs. Gladys Evans recently celebrated her 80th birthday at a luncheon in Cossar State Park Restaurant. Attending the party were her daughter, Linda White; her sister, Opal Gore; Eleanor Evans, Pauline Weaver, Edna Earl McGregor, and Jeanette White.
Water Valley High School students attending the Scholastic Press Institute Workshop at Ole Miss were Pennie Pullen, Melinda Smith, Demeka Smith, Yolanda Campbell, Emily Gurner, Brent Hollister, Chris Riley, Allison Pullen and their advisor, Gayle Beard.
National Leadership Award winners included: Kelly Burns in math and science; Andy Hollinger in math; and Jason Bland for leadership.
James Hollowell was honored at an open house to celebrate his 93rd birthday.
Vera Mae Polk was named Holley’s “Employee of the Month.”
40 Years–April 24, 1986 – Rev. Sam Higdon, manager of the Water Valley Chamber of Commerce, presented a plaque to Mrs. Cathy Hunt Caine, honoring her father, the late Watson Hunt, for his service to the Chamber. Mr. Hunt, a former Water Valley Mayor, was director of the Chamber at the time of his death.
Chris Goodwin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Keny Goodman, was named the STAR Student at Water Valley High School. Chris chose his mother, Cheryl French Goodwin, as his STAR Teacher.
Water Valley’s Watermelon Queen, Marla Sharp, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Sharp, was competing in the Mississippi Watermelon Queen Contest.
The Water Valley High School Future Problem Solving Team was to enter the Mississippi Future Problem Solving Bowl in Clinton.
Acoustic research winners in Mrs. Joyce Burgess’ four science classes were Laquita McCoy, Brandi File, Doris Bell, Leslie Gilley, Joshua Guest and Kevin Edwards.
50 Years—April 22, 1976 – Deborah Grace White was chosen “Miss Water Valley” for 1976 at the annual pageant.
Named “Little Miss Water Valley” was Jerri Ann Burks, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jodie Burks. “Little Mr. Water Valley” was Benny Breckenridge, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Breckenridge. Entertaining at the pageant was “Miss Mississippi” Molly Magee, who also was MC for the event.
The local Jaycees have chosen three young men, Richard Flowers, Charles Thomas White and Charles David Hollister, for inclusion in the “Outstanding Young Men of America” Program.
The new directors of the Water Valley Municipal Library are Mrs. Melvin Ford, Mrs. Arnold Wayne Carothers, Mrs. Binford Williams, Mrs. Ernest Aune, and Jack Watson.
The Water Valley Municipal Library has been served by only two librarians in its 18 years of existence—Mrs.
Lucille Chapman until 1972, when she was succeeded by Mrs. Barron Caulfield.
New PTA officers are: Peggy Howell, president; Peggy Anderson, vice-president; Ora Lee Phillips, secretary; and Pat Brooks, treasurer.
60 Years—April 21, 1966 – The local Big Yank Plant was named “Factory of the Year” for 1965 in the Big Yank complex. Darrell Brineagar was superintendent of the local plant.
Many state lawyers joined Yalobusha lawyers and Water Valley citizens as they honored Hon. John P. Horan on completing 50 years of service in the practice of law.
“The Chattagrea,” a teen age band was one of the groups who would entertain at the Mississippi Arts Festival in Jackson. Members of the band were Donald Dickey, Randy Parsons, Barron Caulfield and Mike Hedges. A quartet, composed of Norman Jones, Elizabeth White, Barron Caulfield, and Paula Scarbrough would also perform at the festival.
A special event honoring George Gafford and Happy Lawton of Orlando, Fla., was a buffet supper in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Trusty.
Sixty-six first grade students in the Davidson and Water Valley schools were to receive physical examinations.
On the President’s List at Northwest Junior College were Bill Oliphant, Paulie Ramsey, and Shirley Sansom, all of Water Valley. On the Dean’s List were Rodney Childress of Water Valley, Ronald Smith of Oakland, and Christine Williams of Coffeeville.
70 Years—April 19, 1956 – Diplomas were to be awarded to 33 Water Valley High School seniors. Top students in the class were Patricia Thomas Bray, Valedictorian; and Co-Salutatorians, Mary Ellen Woods and Eva Mae Kimzey.
At the annual Water Valley High School Dance “King” Tommy Howard and “Queen” Norma Bennett were honored.
W. W. Turnage of Turnage Drug Sore was to serve on a panel to dis- cuss retail-wholesale relations during the fourth annual Pharmacy Conference at the University of Mississippi.
Jeff Davis High School had 15 seniors graduating.
The Lions Club team led in the local softball league. Other teams in the league were Gulf Interstate, Rice-Stix and the Jaycees.
Ed Mays, Jr. was the defending tennis champion in the Chickasaw Conference and in Mississippi was ranked the fifth place junior.
The Water Valley High School Band was guests on the University of Mississippi campus for a tour of the campus, a dinner, and a free band concert in Fulton Chapel
80 Years—April 25, 1946 – Edward Sanders, 4-H Club member from Oakland, is pictured with his reserve champion Angus at the State Roundup Show in Greenwood.
Gllda Lynn Jones and Mildred Person, students at Jeff Davis High School, are two of 31 girls who have been invited to Mississippi State College for Women to attend a conference and compete for one of the $200 Dancy Honor Scholarships.
Piano students of Mrs. J. B. Cowan winning at State Contest of Federated Music Clubs held in Jackson were Ann Gafford, Mary Elizabeth Brown, Bessie Fay Champion, Laura Jo Burns, Billie Maude Green, Mary Lee Edwards, Elizabeth Mitchell, Betty Ann Williamson, and Bessie Fay Champion.
Hosting an open house at the First Methodist Parsonage were Rev. and Mrs. H. H. Wallace.
