Sunday afternoon was another relaxing day. My daughter, Donna, wanted northern beans, slaw and buttermilk cornbread for lunch, so that’s what we had. David did a good job cooking the northern beans and ham hock.
Nathan and Jessica McGee recently took Rowland, Mary Brett and McLendon to New York City for a few days. They visited Trump Tower, Grand Central Station and several other attractions. They had a blast. McLendon said the food was the best part of the trip.
Frank and Freda Weir traveled to Augusta, Ga., for a few days to visit her brother, David Melton, his wife Kathy and their family. They enjoyed spending time with their nieces and nephew and had a wonderful visit.
Jacque and Adam Chambers traveled to Baton Rouge May 15-18. They stayed downtown at the Hilton overlooking the Mississippi River while visiting Jacque’s Houston side of the family.
The family enjoyed a crawfish boil Saturday and spent the day visiting. Jacque said the pineapple cooked with the crawfish was especially good, along with the homemade sauce. She also had the opportunity to meet cousins she had never met before.
On Sunday, they attended an estate sale and found several treasures before returning to a cousin’s home for lunch. Later, they enjoyed seafood chowder made from leftover crawfish. They also visited the Bass Pro Shops in Denham Springs, where Jacque found a boat she liked.
Monday included a trip to Scott, La., to visit Billy’s Boudin. They returned home with plenty of Louisiana food, including fresh shrimp and a gallon of oysters from Chez Francois in Lafayette.
Jacque said the best part of the trip was spending time with family and catching up. She also enjoyed watching the barges travel up and down the Mississippi River.
“We were the hillbillies who showed up at the Hilton Capitol Center on Lafayette Street overlooking the Mississippi River,” Jacque joked. “My cousin Darrel Houston’s father was a brother to my grandmother. I got to meet two of his sons. John is my age and we played together as children, though I don’t remember it. The other son, Eric, came in from Houston, Texas. We cooked at John and Angie Houston’s house and enjoyed meeting their children and Angie’s brothers as well.”
Nathan Hartley hosted a birthday party Sunday for his daughter, Mary Brett. Those attending were Mark and Faye, Kristie, Rowland, McLendon, Hartley, Jessica McGee, Presley and Stella, and Annie, Saylor and Emily Box.
Nathan prepared a great meal and everyone had a wonderful time celebrating.
Celebrating birthdays this week are Sonya Jones Petraff on June 4, Ginny Ford Roy on June 6, Alex Ferguson Ballard on June 7, Jake Rose, Kelly Paris, Charles Pyron and Jonnie Sivley on June 8, and Dusty McKibben on June 10. May you all have a wonderful time celebrating your special day!
Thought for the day: My life is like a camera. Focus on what’s important, capture the good times, develop from the negative, and if things don’t work out, just take another shot.
