Looking Back From 2006 – Mickey Howley wrote about the completed renovations at the Herald office in his weekly Street Talk column. Howley noted that the lower facade resembling a 1960s ranch house granted on a 1880s building was not the best look for the building. The renovation started in the winter of 2005 and was completed in 2006.
20 Years Ago – June 22, 2006 – Mickey Howley wrote that the Herald office at 416 North Main Street was looking good after the completion of a facelift. The lower facade at the Herald was a 1960s ranch house look grafted on a 1880s building wasn’t working. Leigh Ann Black came up with a restoration design and James Ledford and his crew did the work. The Herald maintained operations in the building during the work that started back in the winter. Customers entered through the rear of the building.
Water Valley was modifying the utility bills from a card form to a statement billing and customers will no longer receive a second notice before services were cut-off.
The Water Valley fast pitch softball team won the tournament played in Cleveland. Team members were Crysline Phillips, Stacy Bishop, Kelsey Kimzey, Lauren Kimzey, Mallory Washington, Nakresha Folson, Courtney Phillips, Taylor Coffee, Hayley Vance and Anna True.
Coaching the girls was Shane Brown.
Nicole Sturgis was one of the cast members in the upcoming production of Panola Playhouse’s production of “Grease.”
Ashley Wilbourn and Corey Williamson were named to the Dean’s List for the spring 2006 semester at Millsaps College.
20 Years—June 27, 1996 – Pictured was Cora Lynn Turnage, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Binnie Turnage, 1996-97 Watermelon Queen. She was selected at the Water Valley Junior Auxiliary sponsored pageant, held in the Civic Auditorium.
Water Valley Elementary School Teacher Susan Shaw was named “Outstanding Teacher” in the Alcohol/Tobacco Education Project for her presentation for the 1995-96 School Year.
Leigh Ann Black, daughter of Jeannie and Joe Black of Water Valley, and Trisha Cartwright, daughter of Susan and Gerald Cartwright of Oakland, have been chosen to attend the Mississippi Math and Science School.
30 Years—June 26 1986 – Three Water Valley Band members have been awarded scholarships to area colleges and universities. Missy Walton received a scholarship to Northwest Junior College, Gloria Joy’s scholarship was to Alcorn; and Kevin Herrera was presented a scholarship to the University of Mississippi.
Shelby Lynn Wilbourn earned his Doctor of Medical Science degree from Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans. Dr. Wilbourn is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Wilbourn of Bossier City, La., and he is a grandson of Mrs. Willis Gholson and Mrs. Lloyd Wilbourn, Sr., both of Water Valley.
Trent Howell was Master of Ceremonies at the annual Rotary Banquet held in Yalobusha Country Club.
The three Water Valley garden clubs hosted a tea for 1986 Watermelon Queen, Gloria Cook, in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Binford Williams. In the receiving line were: Mary Lou Williams, hostess; Miss Cook, the queen’s mother, Mrs. Richard Cook; Dorothy Jane Henry, president of The Garden Club of Water Valley; Yvonne Vance, president of Town and Country Garden Club; and Jeannie Clement, president of the Southern Living Garden Club.
Four Water Valley Blue Devils, Jeffrey Bynum, Chad Newman, Lance Newman and Trea Higdon attended the Ole Miss Football Camp.
50 Years—June 24, 1976 – The old standpipe, a city landmark, was recently dismantled. Built in the 1930s, it had served the city for over 60 years. The original standpipe was erected at the top of Clay St. before the turn of the century (site of the structure coming down) and these standpipes had supplied the City with water until recently replaced by water tanks in the northern and eastern parts of the city, and a third tank near Holley Carburetor and Yalobusha General Hospital.
First Baptist Church volunteers spent a full day cleaning the massive chandelier in the sanctuary and the smaller one in the foyer. Pictured at work were Mr. and Mrs. O. J. Gregory, Mrs. Tolbert Maddux, Mrs. Curtis Berry, Mrs. C. C. Stacy and Darrell Crawford.
Bubba Defer was pictured with a good catch of largemouth Bass, taken from Bynum. The fish ranged in weight from six and a half to two pounds.
