Chamber Report
By Jessie Gurner
It’s a Wagner Week! Little sister Kalista is writing back home to Jesse, who is in Water Valley. Kalista is a newlywed in Norman, Oklahoma, and living with her professor husband, Frazer, who later became a prominent psychology professor. Kalista was the most enthusiastic and of-the-day of the female Wagner sisters. She was young, fun and playful. Her time in Oklahoma seems exciting with the shootouts and the cholera morbus (d on’t Google the symptoms if you’re eating right now). I was happy to learn that Jesse got a surrey! I’m not sure if it’s the horse-drawn surrey, the bike surrey or the car surrey. I feel like Jesse wouldn’t go for the car version. Kalista, on the other hand…

Dear Jesse,
I’m very much obliged to you for ordering the rocker for us — wish to send Mrs. Hood much pleasure in it. Don’t forget to have John send the bill to us.
Well, I am excited over father’s coming now and can hardly think of anything else. We have ordered the stuff for our wedding anniversary. Will tell you all about it after it is over. Father is to stay in a house just across the street from us and to take his meals here. I hope to keep him at least a week or 10 days. I think he will have a nice time. At least it will be a new experience for him.
Mr. Cobs and Frazer are going to give him “A Dutchman” at Mr. Laulpadine’s rooms Saturday night. And we are going to have a “hen party” at Mrs. Gurtich’s that same night. Just the wives of the men who go to “The Dutchman.”
It’s too bad about Dudley and the chills. I’ve been having frequent attacks of cholera morbus. In fact such frequent ones that Frazer is becoming alarmed and we have decided that Oklahoma doesn’t agree with me. So I’m coming home on 8 May. How does that strike you?
Frazer will be in Memphis on the 11th and we will spend four or five days with Mabel before coming back home. Then that makes us in Water Valley, two at Tupelo and after that to the mountains or some cool spot!
That double murderer was an awful thing, wasn’t it? I know excitement ran high at home. Glad they got him safe in jail!
About once a week the Wolf boys from the Indian Country ride into town, load up on mean whiskey and ride at full speed through town shooting in any direction and yelling like Comanches. This is their night but it is already past their usual time. They made us to it last night and as our sheriff is away, they promised us another shooting tonight. How is that for the Wild West?
Well, I must close. Write to me soon about your Surrey. That is the best news I heard in a long time for you! I’ll hope for a few rides with you in it soon. Much love from both of us,
I’m your loving sister,
Kalista.
PS. Made a shirtwaist today. I’m getting to be an expert on shirtwaists now.
