Twenty years ago, Dan Hopper was pictured in the Herald with his All-American hot dog cart on Main Street. Hopper served customers Steven and Zachary Stewart, sons of Coy-Anna Stewart and George Stewart, who stopped by for chili dogs.
20 Years—August 24, 2006 — Secretary of State Eric Clark presented Yalobusha County two checks, totaling almost $99,000, money to be used to reimburse the county for voting machines purchased last year. On hand to receive the money were: Circuit Clerk Daryl Burney; election commissioners, Steve Cummings, June Byford, Ora Fay Polk, and Missy Kimzey; supervisors, Amos Sims, Tommy Vaughn, and Butch Surrette; County Attorney John Crow; and State Representative Tommy Reynolds. Rep. Reynolds was instrumental in getting the state funding for the county.
The Town and Country Garden Club invited everyone to Railroad Park on the 24th to watch the eagle be placed atop the Railroad Park Pavilion. This well known landmark had looked over the Bank of Water Valley from 1894 until 1984.
Water Valley schools achieved a superior rating, which denoted them a Level 5 accreditation for the previous school year. The schools were expected to maintain that rating for the present year.
Friday night, the Blue Devils were scheduled to open the football season at Bruce when they meet long-time rivals, the Trojans.
30 Years—August 29, 1996 — Ashley Harris, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Harris, placed second in the International Problem Solving Competitions, held in Providence, Rhode Island. Harris, a freshman at Water Valley High School, was in individual competition in the Intermediate Category.
Water Valley High School cheerleaders Christy Wilbourn, Ashly Aldy, Tanya Odom, Amanda Langdon, Pam Sunderland, Tammy McMinn, Tracy Sutherland, Kellie Burns, Courtney Parsons, Jill Hyde, Aliya Ramirez, Bethany Caulfield, and Nancy Margaret Ray were ready to give their first performance of the season when the Blue Devils meet Holly Springs Friday night.
40 Years—August 28, 1986 — Using proceeds from their booth at the Watermelon Carnival, the Pink Ladies purchased two wheelchairs for the use of residents in Yalobusha County Nursing Home. Pink Lady Lill Van Winkle was pictured with residents, Mrs. Bulah Hudson and Ed Ray Perkins, who were checking out the chairs.
Holley Automotive announced plans to lay off 325 workers. Plant Manager Travis Clement assured everyone that this layoff was in no way reflective on the employees’ work ethic. He stated that the local plant was rated highest in the company for productivity. The layoff was brought about by a new line that is less labor intensive.
50 Years—August 26, 1976 — Drowning victim David Livingston of Oxberry was recovered by the Yalobusha Civil Defense Unit. The boat recovering the body was manned by Stanley True, Eddie Godwin, and Walter Story, all of Water Valley. The Yalobusha Unit had five boats and 26 people on the patrol.
Mrs. Sarah Fry, secretary of the Citizen Band Radio Club, Post 3, was pictured with the plaque sent to the club by St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis for their fundraising efforts. The C.B.’ers raised over $600.
60 Years—August 25, 1966 — T. H. Scarbrough was re-elected president of the Yalobusha County Farm Bureau and Ira Pittman of Coffeeville is a State Farm Bureau Director.
Fritz Lowe recently found a terrapin he had marked 39 years ago when he was 11 years old. Mr. Lowe stated he had scratched the date on the shell of the terrapin.
70 Years—August 30, 1956 — Sports reporter, Ed Mays, in his column stated that the Blue Devils looked good in practices. The season opener would be against cross country rival, Oakland, and coaching the Blue Devils was Bob Cire.
Pictured in a practice session were Bobby Allred, Charles Miles, Jim Ed Larson, Bobby Schmitz, Charles Larson, David Green, Bill Lantrip, David Vaughn, and Pitt Person.
A dial phone system for Water Valley has been postponed for a time.
The Water Valley Lions Club expressed thanks to area citizens for their support of the broom sale.
Camp Ground School was to begin classes on Sept. 3, and the school’s superintendent was Harvey Gray.
80 Years—August 29, 1946 — Tom Myers, retired locomotive engineer and a former member of the board of aldermen, won the Democratic nomination for mayor of the City of Water Valley. He succeeds Mayor F. B. DeShon. Bill Robinson was elected city marshal.
The football schedule includes Grenada, Batesville, Vardaman, Senatobia, Houston, and Charleston, with several dates still open.
Evelyn Gore, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. Gore, was discharged from the Women’s Army Corps (W.A.C.). In service, she had served as a medical laboratory technician and will continue to work at Castle Field in Merced, Calif. in this capacity.
Officers and directors of the Yalobusha County Livestock and Fair Association met and voted to hold the Fair for Youth Clubs on October 8. Plans were made to purchase land and build buildings for both junior and senior exhibitors for next year’s event. They planned to make this one of the best fairs in the state.
