When most people hear the words “Chamber of Commerce,” they naturally think about businesses. And certainly, supporting our local businesses is a big part of what the Water Valley Area Chamber of Commerce does.
We are deeply appreciative of our business members. Their support helps make the Chamber’s work possible, and their investment in this community reaches far beyond their own front doors.
But here is something you may not know. You do not have to own a business to be a member of the Chamber.
The Chamber also welcomes individual members and couples who simply want to support the work being done in our community.
That may surprise a few people, but it really shouldn’t. After all, what makes Water Valley special has never been limited to the businesses with signs over their doors. It is the people who shop in those businesses, attend community events, volunteer, welcome newcomers, show up when help is needed and take a little pride in calling this place home.
Those people are part of the Chamber’s mission, too.
An individual Chamber membership is a simple way to say, “I believe in Water Valley, and I want to help support the things that make our community a good place to live, work and visit.”
Chamber membership helps support the promotion of Water Valley and our local businesses, but it also helps make possible many of the activities and events we enjoy throughout the year. It supports the work that goes on behind the scenes, often long before the first tent goes up, the first visitor arrives or the first announcement appears on Facebook.
And you certainly do not have to be the person organizing an event, carrying tables or standing in the July heat to be part of that effort. Sometimes supporting the people who are doing those things is contribution enough.
Maybe you are retired. Maybe you work somewhere that already has a business membership. Maybe you have never owned a business and never plan to. Maybe you simply like living here and want to see Water Valley continue to grow while holding on to the things that make us Water Valley.
There is room for you at the Chamber.
Individual and couple memberships also give people another way to become more connected to what is happening in the community. You may discover an event you want to attend, a project you would like to support or even a place where you would enjoy volunteering. Or you may simply want the satisfaction of knowing that your membership helps the Chamber continue its work.
Not everybody has to chair a committee. Sometimes being one of the people quietly saying, “Yes, I support this,” matters more than we realize.
Small towns have always worked that way. A lot gets accomplished because a lot of people each do a little something.
So if you have thought Chamber membership was only for businesses, consider this your invitation to pull up a chair.
You can join as an individual or as a couple and become part of the group working to promote, support and celebrate Water Valley.
