Dog Attacks Put Focus On Animal Control

WATER VALLEY — The Water Valley Board of Aldermen will meet tonight, Sept. 17, with advertising for an animal control officer among the items on the agenda following two reported dog attacks in the city this week.

The board will meet at 5 p.m. at City Hall.

A woman was bitten by a dog Tuesday on Martin Street and required treatment at the emergency room, according to Water Valley Police Chief Jason Mangrum. A second person was reportedly bitten Thursday morning near First Baptist Church and also required medical treatment.

The incidents come as the city continues to operate without a permanent animal control officer, a position that has been largely vacant since longtime Public Works Director Michael Scroggins retired June 30, 2025.

The city briefly filled the animal control position with a former city employee, but he later left the job after being bitten by a dog.
