WATER VALLEY – For as long as she can remember Rebecca McGavock has been involved with art.
“In school I always drew and at home I would watch my Mom paint and draw with her,” said McGavock, whose work is currently on display at Renasant Bank.
Nine pieces of her art hang in the lobby as the latest installment of a rotating show sponsored by the bank and the Water Valley Arts Council.
About half of the works are oil on canvas, one of her favorite mediums along with graphite pencil. The rest are pen and ink and scratchboard.
“I love mixing oil paint so much. I use a palate knife instead of a brush,” said McGavock.” I put big gobs on a piece of glass and just smear it around and work with it and try to make the colors.”
For the past two years, she has been studying art at Northwest Community College. But, she is not an art major right now. Instead, she is planning to complete a degree in forestry at Mississippi State University and become a U.S. Park Ranger.
For now, McGavock will continue to do commissions and looks forward to teaching art to children one day. “I would like to have an after school art camp for kids,” she said.
The show at Renasant Bank will run for another week.
