‘Configuration’ Change Could Come At The School

WATER VALLEY – Superintendent Dr. Michael McInnis briefly addressed a possible configuration change of grades in the school district for the coming school year, referring to the possibility of adding a middle school for the school district.
“We are very early in the planning phases of this. Once we get a little closer I will provide additional details on this,” McInnis told school trustees during a meeting held Monday night. The superintendent also said he is working with two teacher advisory teams on the matter.
McInnis also told trustees that baseball and softball season got underway at the high school on Feb. 1 during his report. McInnis added that an archery team has been organized at the high school

Also in his report, McInnis said the high school had the first Friday event in five years last week with a talent show.
“It was a huge success and around $600 was raised to benefit the high school library,” the superintendent explained.
At Davidson Elementary School, McInnis reported grades two through sixth have completed their January I Ready standards in math, language and reading.
“These assessment measure the students’ level of mastering specific standards taught during the month of January. Administrators and teachers are taking a real close look to see how far we are growing these students,” McInnis explained.
Other business discussed at the meeting:
• Chris Terry was also welcomed to the board. Terry was appointed last month by trustees to replace Cayce Washington, who resigned after he was elected as District 1 supervisor.
“Thank you for filling in,” Board President Taylor Trusty said. Terry will serve the remaining year in the term.
• Accepted a $3,000 donation for the library at Davidson Elementary School. Trustee Pierce Epes read the narrative explaining the fundraiser utilizing a GoFundMe account. In the narrative, Epes explained that DES Speech and Language Pathologist Laura Bingham and DES Librarian Andrea Clement spearheaded the fundraiser after Bingham reached out to her sister, a book publicist in New York City.
Bloomsbury Publishing Firm donated almost 100 books to the library. Clement and Bingham also wrote a letter for the GoFundMe campaign which allowed Bingham’s sister to utilize her contacts to raise the $3,000 for the library.
• Approved a Title Six application which provides $23,499 designated for teacher’s salaries.
• Approved the minutes from the Jan. 19 meeting.
• Deleted two computers from the inventory that are no longer in use.
The meeting lasted 10 minutes before trustees entered a lengthy executive discuss to discuss a personnel issue at Davidson Elementary School.
