Injured Officer Remains In Critical Condition

COFFEEVILLE – A Coffeeville police officer remains in critical condition almost a month after he was injured in the line of duty. Milton Hervey was helping direct traffic at a two vehicle accident at the intersection of Hwy. 7 and Hwy. 330 on August 20 when he was struck by a passing motorist.
Coffeeville Police Chief Mark Martin said Hervey is in intensive care at the Regional Medical Center in Memphis.
“He is in very critical condition,” Martin told the Herald.
The incident remains under investigation by the sheriff’s department with assistance from the Mississippi Highway Patrol. The driver of the vehicle, Clinton Dewayne Byford, was arrested and charged with resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and failure to move over for a recovery vehicle. Sheriff Lance Humphreys said he is still waiting on lab results from blood taken from Byford following the incident.
“We are working with the district attorney’s office to see if Byford will face additional charges,” Humphreys said.
A prayer vigil is scheduled for Hervey at 10 a.m. on the west side of the Coffeeville courthouse.
“He is a great police officer and a great guy, this has been very tough on our department and his family and friends,” Martin said about the injured officer.
