Rev. Calvin Hawkins, moderator of the Mt. Moriah District Missionary Baptist Association, presents an award to Sis. Suzzette Ware, who accepted on behalf of her mother, Sis. Mamie Shields.
COFFEEVILLE – The Mt. Moriah District Missionary Baptist Association honored Mamie Shields for her loving and dedicated service to the association, which spans more than five decades. Shields was appointed District Youth Leader in 1968 under the leadership of the late Honorable Moderator J.C. Batteast. She faithfully served in this role until 2016, totaling 54 years of devoted service.
Shields was recognized for her commitment to the youth of the organization, reaching across Yalobusha and Calhoun counties, as well as parts of Grenada and Panola counties.
She is a member of Bethlehem M. B. Church, where she serves under the leadership of her son-in-law, Pastor Larry D. Ware. She is the wife of retired Water Valley High School coach Bro. Lincoln Shields and the mother of Sis. Suzzette Ware, Bro. Jeffrey Shields, and Rev. Derrick Shields.
Throughout her tenure, Shields worked diligently within her church and community, offering countless workshops and biblical training sessions.

She played a key role in the construction of the current worship facility. Before the sanctuary was built, she traveled from church to church, calling and gathering youth to participate in the Annual Sessions and Youth Activities.
Many recall that the youth never had a choice about attending Monday night meetings — it was simply understood they were expected to be there. Her leadership made that expectation clear, and her dedication ensured the success of these gatherings.
The Mt. Moriah District Missionary Baptist Association is the oldest African American organized group in Yalobusha County. Founded in 1908 by Dr. C.P. Bohannon, the Mt. Moriah Union Missionary Baptist Association and its auxiliaries have faithfully served the community for more than a century.
The award was presented by the current Moderator, Rev. Calvin Hawkins, during the association’s 117th Annual Session held in August at the Mt. Moriah District Headquarters in Coffeeville. Unable to attend, Mrs. Shields was represented by her daughter, Suzzette Ware, who accepted the award on her behalf.
After 117 years, the association continues to serve the community with strength and commitment.
