Hey y’all, and welcome back to my column, Inside the Blue and White! It was a great week on the campus of Water Valley High School. I’m so glad you’re back reading and enjoying it! Let me tell you all the exciting news and things that have happened!

Kenley Pullen pushes the ball during recent volleyball action as the Lady Blue Devils continue building on a strong season.
Golf’s tournament got cancelled this Thursday because of the rain. They were playing against Grenada at the YCC in Water Valley. Their tournament was rescheduled to Thursday, September 4. Wish them luck!
Volleyball got back on the road to Houlka and won 3–1 in sets. We played them again at home on Thursday and swept them off their feet! Our setter Natalie Hernandez was out for this game, so Mariah Wilson played setter. Even though she was relocated, we all think she did great! It was Addy Dougles’ first time serving in a game, and she got five aces in a row! Me, as well as Alyssa Williams, carried in serves. Our record has been the best it has been in years. This is big for Water Valley girls’ sports. Next week on Tuesday is against Grenada at their place, then Thursday is our very first district game of the season against Myrtle. Please wish us all the luck as we carry on this record and fight hard.
Every game day Friday, we have themes for the football games and last week’s theme is camouflage as the Blue Devils faced Independence High School. Our Water Valley Blue Devils won 19–7! Friday they will take on South Pontotoc at their place! The theme for next Friday’s game is “Cap the Cougar” — wear a hat or a cap! Go and support your Blue Devils!
Dual credit classes are underway! The students are getting a taste of college with the college classes in a partnership with Northwest Mississippi Community College. The classes vary from Public Speaking to Comp English!

Zae Bradford takes a breather during Friday’s football game against the Wildcats.
“Starting my first year of dual credit has been both exciting and challenging,” shared first-year dual credit student Cohen Hart said.”At first the idea of taking college-level classes felt intimidating, but it quickly became something I saw as an opportunity. These classes push me to think deeper and work harder than regular high school courses, and they’re teaching me skills that will prepare me for life after graduation.”
I also asked Cohen how the classes are different from high school classes. He explained: “One of the biggest differences is the independence. In high school, teachers remind you of due dates and guide you step by step, but in dual credit you’re expected to manage your time and take responsibility for your own learning.”
Dual credit gives these kids a big opportunity. It opens new possibilities like earning credit early and exploring new subjects.
Homecoming votes are in, and the court will be: Jamaria Morgan, freshman maid; Channa Freeman and Janiyah Gooch, sophomore maids; Zamayiah Kuykendall and Kenley Pullen, junior maids; and Joniyah Benson Amari Gooch, Kristaney Reed and Megan Willingham, senior maids.
The homecoming parade is scheduled Thursday, Sept. 25. Lineup is at 5 at Crawford Sports Complex. The parade will begin at 5:30 and end at First Baptist Church. A pep rally follow at City Park after a 15-minute break from the parade. Homecoming is Friday, September 26, and the theme is “Rock the Rams.” We will host Vardaman. Dress like a rock star!
I decided to change it up this week a little and also include a few events from the elementary school! The kiddos are also busy with fun activities and so many things to do! Mrs. Jack’s class made ecosystems, capturing different biomes all over the world. The first graders are on it! Mrs. Cook’s first graders earned compliments from their peers! They had popcorn, a drink, and a movie to celebrate.
Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts came onto campus and talked to the little ones about joining. They have started this thing called “Light-Keeper,” allowing the kids to turn off the classroom lights when entering a naturally lit space or when not in use, also letting the students close open doors and blinds to regulate temperature and reduce HVAC load. And also letting them wear their hats on the playground to avoid sun exposure! Lastly, the administrators are throwing a grand ball in celebration of Grandparents Day. This event is Monday, September 8, from 4:30 p.m. until at the Davidson Elementary gymnasium. Admission is $5 per person. Concessions will be sold!
That will wrap up this week at the Water Valley High School and elementary schools! We all strive to get better every day! Thank you for reading this week’s article, and I hope you will come back next week and catch up with us! See ya next week with more Water Valley School District news!
