County workers Wade Woodard and John Hill were busy resealing portions of county roads in Beat Three 20 years ago.
10 Years—October 29, 2015 – Readers weighed in on the November unit versus beat referendum by writing letters to the editor. Larry Bell said that the county could not afford an additional two jobs, a county administrator and road foreman, as required under the unit system. Bell said if the vote for unit system passes, you can bet a large tax increase will follow. Cliff Lawson wrote that graveling roads, a time-honored Beat System tradition is paid for by all the people.

20 Years—October 27, 2005 – Gurner Photography was to be open on Monday, October 31, from 1:30-7:30 to make pictures of the children in Halloween costumes. Pictured in the ad was Matthew Bernard, 2, dressed as Bob the Builder, one of the previous year’s photos. Money raised from the photo shoot was to benefit the Oxford-Lafayette Humane Society.
Electric Department Manager Eddie Magee was honored for 33 years of service. He retired June 30, but continued to work as a consultant until December. Joe New was the new manager.
The Blue Devils were headed toward the play-offs with their 26-0 win over the Byhalia Indians. Ronnie Ferrell led the Devils ball control attack with 117 yards on 21 carries.
Danny and Larry Harris received recognition from the Rural Medical Scholars Program. They were among 24 students in a five-week summer program at Mississippi State University.
30 Years—October 26, 1995 – The Junior Auxiliary purchased a sign to identify the Water Valley Field House as “Home of the Blue Devils.” Pictured admiring the sign were Head Coach Gary Drewery and JA President Glenda Gordon.
Five-month old Henry Pittman was the fourth generation of his family. He was pictured with his great-grandmother, Mildred Bell, his grandmother, Margaret Daum of Virginia, and his father, Greer Person of California.
The Daums and Persons were here visiting Mrs. Bell and other relatives.
40 Years–October 31, 1985 – Sarah Ruth Hayles was presented a plaque by Mayor Hamric Henry on her recent retirement as head bookkeeper for the Water Valley Electric Department.
Three retirees of Holley Carburetor were honored and presented 12-year plaques by Plant Superintendent Travis Clement. Retiring were Lynn Edwards, Elizabeth Person, and Ora Lee Wilson.
Mrs. Mary McCain was pictured in the beautifully decorated dining room of McCain’s Restaurant, located in the Chickasaw Hills Area of Enid Reservoir.
50 Years—October 30, 1975 – Vallians Phil Maynor and “Pee Wee” Mayo were among a group of hunters showing a trophy elk killed during a hunt in Colorado and Wyoming.
60 Years—October 28, 1965 – New Junior Chamber of Commerce officers were: Oscar (Buddy) Mackey, president; Dale Shaw, vice president; Melvin Ford, secretary; Binnie Turnage, treasurer; and Bill Hall, director.
Jim Robertson, 100 years old, died in the hospital.
The Blue Devils, hoping for a Chickasaw Conference Championship, lost Friday night to the Horn Lake Eagles. Senatobia and Water Valley were deadlocked at 6- 0 in the Conference, with the Warriors at 25 consecutive wins and the Devils going after their 27th win out of 29 games under the leadership of Coach Bobby Clark.
70 Years—November 3, 1955 – For the first time Yalobusha County Farm Bureau selected a queen and king. Named queen was Margaret Jane Frost of Oakland and Robert Williams was selected king. First alternates were Nell Nolen of Sylva Rena and Ed York of Scuna Valley, and second alternates were Pat Gholson and Loyd Wilbourn, Jr., both of Jeff Davis.
80 Years—November 1, 1945 – Hendricks Machine Shop was burglarized. Owner, Dixie Hendricks, stated that finger print experts were on the case and every clue was being fol- lowed. Several other businesses had been burglarized during the past few weeks.

105 Years Ago, October 29, 1920 – The young ladies of the Yalobusha County Agricultural High School of Oakland have organized.
110 Years Ago, October 9, 1915 – An alleged forger was held under $1,750 bond. J.B. Smith, alias G. Johnson, claiming no particular place for home and who was recently arrested at the instance of the Coffeeville Bank and the Peoples Bank of this city, was given a preliminary hearing Friday in Judge Wood’s court.
Smith alias Johnson is charged with forgery. Judge Wood bound Smith over to the grand jury under a $750 bond on the charge preferred by the Peoples Bank. The magistrate at Coffeeville had previously held Smith under a $1,000 bond for the charge preferred by the Coffeeville Bank.
