20 Years—December 1, 2005 – Gas prices had dropped to below $2 per gallons, with the pump at Sprint Mart advertising $1.92 per gal.
Jack and Jean Craven were to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on December 16.
Caleb McMahen, 15-year-old-son of Mr. and Mrs. Gil McMahen, bagged a massive 8-point buck, hunting on private property. He reported he had passed up two smaller bucks earlier in the day.
Walker Gossett, seven-year-old son of Mike and Jennifer Gossett, killed a seven-point buck hunting near Water Valley.
Among deaths reported this week were Mrs. Hester Jones, Sherman Coker, and Harold True.
Ashley Wilbourn, daughter of Ruth and Billy Wilbourn, was elected president of Mu Chapter of Kappa Delta sorority at Millsaps College.
T.K. Townsend, a young (eight-year-old) minister, was to preach his first sermon at Bayson Chapel.
30 Years—November 30, 1995 – Officers and advisors of the Water Valley Junior High School Student Council attended the annual North Mississippi Student Council Workshop at Ole Miss. Attending were: advisors, Paul Harris and Felecia Campbell; and students, Kellie Burns, Cassandra Hawkins, Kelley Pullen, and Jill Terry.
Major Mike Odom, son of Dr. Paul Odom, public affairs director for the 403D, an Air Force Reserve Unit, spoke to the Rotarians. Major Odom flew with National and International Media aboard a 3-130 Hercules.
The Velma Volunteer Fire Dept. has organized a Ladies Auxiliary. Officers are: Mary Sue Stevens, president; Clara Spence, first vice president; Nell Cox, second vice president; Kathy Edwards, treasurer; Lisa Pearcy, secretary; Shirley Berry, chaplain; and Candace Stevens, publicity chairman.
Mrs. Irene Wright visited the American Quilting Museum in Paducah, Ky. A resident of Yalobusha County Nursing Home, Mrs. Wright was visiting her son and his wife, Dan and Brenda Wright, in Paducah.
40 Years—December 5, 1985 – Bennie and Ludie Appleton were selected as Grand Marshals of the annual Water Valley Christmas Parade.
Pastor John Ford and Deacon John Landreth were pictured at the dedication service of First United Pentecostal Church of Water Valley.
First Baptist Church will begin using their new Education Building Sunday. Pictured was the restored sanctuary of the church.
Both buildings were destroyed by the April 1984 tornado.
Mike Edwards was shown with his four-point buck, his first kill of the season.
Johnny Easley, an avid “regular” hunters, was pictured with a buck killed the hard way—hit with his pick-up. The deer weighed 200 pounds.
Coach Freddie Folson reported that the Water Valley Semi-Pro cage teams opened their season with wins over Oakland.
50 Years—December 4, 1975 – Rev. Guy Reedy, pastor of Water Valley First Baptist Church, was elected a member of the board of directors for the Baptist Children’s Village.
The Water Valley Jaycees were planning a free fire- works display to be held December 5 in the local football stadium.
Jerry Hill and “Bud” Phillips were pictured with a very unusual white buck, killed in the Water Valley area. The deer was a seven- pointer.
The entire membership of Webelo Scouts advanced to the Boy Scouts in a ceremony. Boy Scouts Ernest Davis, Jr. and Damon Burk, were present to welcome the new Scouts. Advancing to Boy Scout status were Steve Thompson, Jerry Black, Jim Shearer, Greg Burress, Jack Lewis, Mark Newman, Joey Joyner, and Kris Aunt. Also present were Scoutmaster Travis Clement and Den Two Leader, John Lewis.
A dedication for the Christian Church Education Building was held Sunday.
Bobby Turnage was pictured with his first deer, a three-point buck. Bobby, the son of Jo and Bennie Turnage, was hunting off Hwy. 30, out from Oxford.
Among the births listed this week were: Melanie Darlene Mooney, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David R. Mooney; and Danny Joe Jaudon, son of Carol and Danny Jaudon.
60 Years—December 2, 1965 – Mrs. Melvin Ford, Junior Auxiliary Prevention Chairman, presented certificates to Safety Poster and Essay Contest winners, Steve Ross (poster) and Bessie Lou Womble (essay).
Seventeen floats were entered in the Christmas parade.
Coach Ralph Mitchell’s Baldwyn Bearcats won a share of the Tombigbee Conference. A WVHS graduate, Coach Mitchell is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Mitchell of Water Valley.
Coach Don Johnson’s Blue Devils round ballers met their first defeat of the season at the hands of the Bruce Trojans.
Listed in the Tomorrow’s Men & Women Column was the birth of Emily Marie Johnsey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Johnsey.
Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Williams celebrated their golden wedding Anniversary Thanksgiving Day at an open House, hosted by their children.
Norman Jones, son of Mr. and Mrs. Quay Jones, was selected outstanding senior by The Yellow Jacket staff.
A two-page advertisement announced the Grand Opening of Larson’s Big Star.
Mr. and Mrs. Dale Sartain had their children, Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Dale Sartain of Cleveland, and Jackie Sartain of Northwest Junior College, visiting them over the holidays.
70 Years—December 1, 1955 – George Lester Conway, 49, was killed instantly when a tree fell on him as he was cutting timber. He was the son of Marshall and Bettie Conway and husband of Shirley Conway.
It was announced by Allen English of WSUH that tentative plans were to establish a broadcasting station in Water Valley.
At the area Yalafa District Boy Scouts annual banquet, local Scouts and Explorers receiving recognition for attaining the rank of First Class in Scouting were: Sonny Sartor, George Hayles, Larry Cox, Binnie Turnage, Bobby Gore, Sambo Hart, Charles Goode, and Joe Ford.
In the Water Valley HI- Lites column it was announced that the deadline for the second Lion Oil Scholarship Contest was fast approaching. Miss Coralie Metcalf, English teacher at WVHS, assigned essays for her students to write as entries in the contest.
