This rather large Christmas stocking, appropriately titled the World’s Largest Christmas Stocking, was on display at Valley Lumber and Hardware in 2005. Owner Larry Sprouse had a drawing to give away the stocking to the lucky winner.
20 Years—December 15, 2005 – The Herald is now available online.
Purchase Clerk Janet Caulder was honored for her dedicated service to Yalobusha County by the Board of Supervisors.
Volunteers Lamar Burgess, Woodrow Logan, Carnic Burgess and Gary Williamson were working on a Habitat for Humanity home, being built for Laqueta Faustin.
Even with overcast skies, a large crowd was on Main Street to watch the Christmas parade. The parade was temporarily stopped when a tall float snagged the Christmas tree decoration that was across the street in front of the Herald office. The float causing the delay was the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers boat.
30 Years—December 14, 1995 – An open house was held at the Downtown Branch of the Peoples Bank and Trust Company honoring Melvin Ford, who was retiring.
Christmas music, scheduled in several local churches, included: First Baptist presentation of the cantata, “City of Light,” with choir, orchestra and drama, under the direction of Minister of Music Keith Stevens; Camp Ground Baptist ‘s choir, directed by Ed Shearer, III, presented the cantata, “All Through the Night;” O’Tuckolofa Baptist presented the cantata, “Where Love Leads,” with the choir directed by Rufus Ross; Bethel Baptist’s presentation was “The Light Shines Out,” under the direction of Minister of Music Steve Fredericks; Oakland Baptist’s choir presented “Name Above All Names” and was directed by Tammy Cowsert; and Delay Road Baptist presented a Christmas play, “Christmas is a Time to Love.”
40 Years—December 19, 1985 – Ashley Harris, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Harris, was pictured visiting with Santa at The Mechanics Savings Bank’s Open House.
John Cox of Laurel was presented the Laurel Service Board of Directors “Outstanding Member” Award.
Billy B. Williamson and Keith Langston were pictured with an 8-point and a 10-point bucks killed. The two deer were traveling together when the kills were made.
Perry Myrick was pictured with a perfect 10-point buck, weighing 175 pounds, killed in the Pine Valley area.
50 Years—December 18, 1975 – In a skit presented during the Water Valley High School Band Concert, Vivian Sanders was the mouse in “Twas the Night Before Christmas.” Band Director Stanley Crow narrated the poem and the band played the background music.
Thirteen Brownie Scouts initiated in to the troop were Edna Baker, Pam Dickey, Missy Melton, Julie Thompson, Teresa Potts, Mandy Sharp, Sharon Therrell, Shelby Singleton, Nell Bell, Julie Ingram, Missy Hayles, Angela Stepp, Michele Newman, Marla Sharp, Angela Pass, Sandy Loper, Dionne Higdon, Janet Anderson, Susan Burress, and Lea Ann Todd.
The Water Valley High School Band marched in the Greenwood Christmas Festival Parade. During the Christmas season the band participated in five parades.
60 Years—December 16, 1965 – First place float winner in the Jaycee Christmas Parade was “Candy House,” entry of The Mechanics Savings Bank. Second place win- ner was “Adventures in Nurseryland,” sponsored by Junior Auxiliary. On the float were Kathy Williams as Little Miss Muffett, Woody Strode as Little Jack Honer, Karen Young as Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star; Rex Howell, Brennan Horan, and Steve Hill, as Rub-a-Dub-Dub Three Men in a Tub; Ben Williams as Wee Willie Winkle; Bobby Turnage as Humpty Dumpty, Becky Bland as Queen of Hearts; and Mary Beth Knight, Tammy Oaks, and Candy Walker as Little Hearts.
Paula K. Scarbrough was the “Gold Angel” in First Methodist Church’s Christmas Pageant.
70 Years—December 15, 1955 – Julia Fite was elected North Mississippi Area II Y-Teen president.
The Blue Devils basketball team were to play Duck Hill. The team had suffered overwhelming losses to Coffeeville and Yocona, but hoped to fare better in this.
