WATER VALLEY – The Walton/Dowsing Community Scholarship Banquet was held Saturday, April 18, at 2 p.m. at Fountain Square in Water Valley. The event was sponsored by the Women’s Missionary Society of Miles Memorial C.M.E. Church, led by President Rubye Carr.
The keynote address was delivered by U.S. Representative Bennie Thompson, who encouraged students to remain committed to their goals while staying connected to their roots. Reflecting on the message, scholarship recipient A’lexia Horton shared that she was especially inspired by his words: “Keep striving for your future, but don’t forget where you come from. Come back home and strive here—whether in your hometown or a surrounding community.”
A total of nine scholarships were awarded during the banquet, along with recognition of one graduating senior as Missionary Student of the Year. Scholarship awards ranged from $500 to $1,000. Looking ahead, Mrs. Carr expressed optimism for the program’s continued growth and encouraged community support by inviting those interested in donating toward next year’s scholarships to contact her directly at (662-614-3464) for more information. She also shared a vision for increasing all scholarship awards to $1,000 or more next year, adding, “With God on our side and the community behind us, we can do it.”
