Holiday Blood Drives – Donors Needed

Staff Report

WATER VALLEY, Miss. – The holiday season is a busy time for most people. As a result, blood donations traditionally decline. However, the need for blood remains constant.

To combat this need, a pair of blood drives are scheduled in the Valley, one on Friday, December 14, at Piggly Wiggly, and one on Tuesday, December 18, at Yalobusha General Hospital.

Volunteer blood donors must be at least 17, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health with a valid id.

The Friday drive is coordinated by United Blood Services, the area’s non-profit blood provider. Donated blood from the event, which is scheduled from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m., will replenish the local blood supply and stock hospitals’ shelves for the upcoming holiday season. For more information on the United Blood Services drive, or to schedule an appointment call UBS at (662) 842-8871 or log on to www.bloodhero.com.

The Tuesday, December 18, blood drive is sponsored by Mississippi Blood Services. A donor coach will be in the hospital parking lot from 1 to 6 p.m. All donors at this event will also receive a t-shirt.

Mississippi Blood Services offers a “mini physical” before each donation to ensure the donation process is safe for the donor as well as the recipient.
