December Sales Tax Dips In The Valley, Oakland, Coffeeville See Nice Increases

Mississippi sales tax is collected by the retailer, paid the next month to the state which then reports the collected figures and disburses the municipalities’ portion the following month. In Mississippi, cities and towns receive 18.5 percent of the state sales tax revenue collected within their boundaries. The state has a 7 percent state sales tax.
Water Valley’s portion of the sales tax collection last December was $38,769.60, a 2.5 percent decrease compared to December, 2006, when the town’s portion was $39,769.60.
Coffeeville received a 27 percent increase in December, 2007, compared to December in 2007. Coffeeville’s portion of the sale tax was $8,710.72.
Oakland also recorded a nice increase, receiving just under 10 percent more money in sales tax collected in December as compared to the same month in the previous year. Oakland received $3,992.25 for December, 2007.
Other nearby towns showing increases for December 2007, when compared to December 2006, include Batesville, up 8.4 percent from $285,549.20 to $309,518.81; Charleston, up 12.1 percent from $24,445.70 to $27,413.67; Calhoun City, up 8.4 percent, from $24,832.10 to $26,921.45; Oxford, up 10.3 percent, from $444,504.08 to $492,110.73; Grenada, up .4 percent from $301,123.57 to $302,258.35; Tupelo, up 9.8 percent from $1,322,063.15 to $1,451,326.11 and Taylor up 16.9 percent from $1,507.28 to $1,612.42.
Reporting a loss during the same month’s comparison was Bruce, down 2.4 percent from $35,901.62 to $35,024.44.
