Primary Election Will Be Tuesday, Includes Race For President, Congress

WATER VALLEY – With Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama running neck and neck, Mississippi voters may have more say than ever before in the March 11 primary next Tuesday.

Some political pundits have said that if Obama’s winning streak continues and he posts big wins from the March 4 primaries, Clinton will drop out. But, neither candidate is expected to win enough delegates in the remaining primaries to take the nomination outright.

Whatever happens, Yalobusha County Circuit Clerk Daryl Burney said the Mississippi congressional races are still going on and it is very important to get out and vote. “More than likely we’ll have a run-off in three weeks if we don’t have a clear winner.”

Burney added that on April 22 there will also be a special election to fill the seat of Roger Wicker whose congressional term doesn’t end until Dec. 31. Not all the candidates in that race have qualified since the deadline isn’t until March 7.

State law that allows the governor to appoint a Senator but not a Congressman, the circuit clerk said.

Yalobushians are going to have several chances to exercise their right to vote, Burney adds. “We have the possibility of having six elections this year.”

If you want to vote and need information, the Circuit Clerk’s office is here to help you, Burney emphasized. The office will be open Saturday, March 8, from 8 to 12 a.m. for absentee voting.

The deadline has passed to register to vote for this primary election, but you still have time to register to vote for the general election in November.
