Yalobusha County’s unemployment rate was the lowest it has been for January in the past five years.
The January figure of 7.7 percent is almost a point and a half lower that the January 2007 figure of 9.1 percent. The average for the past five years is 9.2 percent, according to statistics from the Mississippi Department of Employment Security.
The MDES reports that conditions were about as expected for the state as a whole. Most local areas are showing relatively normal levels of employment and unemployment, going up or down according to usual seasonal trends.
Yalobusha County’s labor force in January was reported by the MDES at 5,430 with 420 unemployed.
Overall unemployment in the state averaged 6.4 percent while the national average was 5.4 percent.
Historically, rates for February are very near those posted in January, so little change is expected when the next month’s rates are published said Wayne Gasson, Bureau Director, Labor Market Information for MDES.
