Valedictorin Steffi River and Salutatorian Victoria Kilpatrick

Water Valley’s 60-plus grad candidates look like little senior ants when viewed from the walkway in the Tad Smith Coliseum. The class of 2008 practiced Wednesday morning in preparation for Thursday night.

Dr. Glenn Kitchens, High School Princiapal, is giving instructions to the seniors at practice Wednesday. Are they listening? Were you?

WATER VALLEY – Sixty-seven Water Valley seniors are candidates for diplomas in Thursday night’s graduation ceremony.

The commencement will begin at 7 p.m., May 22, at the Tad Smith Coliseum.

Ceremonies will begin with a call to order by Assistant High School Principal Ricky Babb, followed by the procession of graduates. Dr. Glenn Kitchens, High School Principal, will then welcome the attendees and introduce the first speaker, salutatorian Victoria Kilpatrick. She is the daughter of Tim and Karen Kilpatrick.

Following the salutatorian’s speech, Kitchens will recognize the seven honor graduates in the class. These honorees include Kilpatrick, Valedictorian Steffi River, Melissa Leigh Ann Wilbourn, Joshua Lowery, Jessica Smith, Terrance Carr and Marshall Gardner.

“Each of these students have maintained a 92 or higher grade point average,” Kitchens said. The average is taken from all courses  taken by the students from which carnegie units are earned, dating back to the eighth grade, according to Kitchens.

The next portion of the graduation will include highlights from the senior class.

“There were 104 students that started in kindergarten,” Kitchens said, referring to the class of 2008. Kitchens will then introduce valedictorian River, who will address the crowd. River is the daughter of Keith and Jayne River.

The much-anticipated presentation of diplomas and certificates will follow River’s speech. After the class members are pronounced graduates, the event will conclude with a video presentation.
