Aldermen Approve Bids For Equipment At Baker Park
By Jack Gurner
WATER VALLEY – What if they called a meeting a no one showed up?
For a few minutes it appeared that might be the case for the city board Monday. The meeting was called to open bids on playground equipment and asphalt for the parking lot and basketball court at Baker Street Park.
The mayor was there as well as the board attorney and so were representatives from two vendors and the city’s engineering firm. But, right up until the last minute no aldermen had shown.
Moments before the scheduled start time of 1 p.m., Alderman Tommy Swearengen arrived. He joked that he could raise both hands and one foot to get the three votes required for a quorum.
That touch of humor broke the tension until the arrival of Aldermen Sherry Johnson and Lance Clement. The meeting began at 1:08.
The three aldermen voted to take under advisement bids from J. A. Dawson & Co. and Jefcoat Construction for playground equipment and a bid for asphalt from Double S, Inc.
Then they voted to accept a bid of $4,216.76 for Miracle Recreation Equipment for picnic tables, benches, and garbage cans for the park project.
Next they voted to accept a bid of $6,030 for an X-wave 2 from the Dawson firm. The X-wave 2 is like a modern form of the old favorite see-saw but allows “bouncing with the energy of a dozen or more children.”
The last item listed on the agenda was payment of invoices for work done under the airport grant. The board members voted to pay Willis Engineering $1,552 and Columbus Fencing $817.91.
The mayor received approval to add one more item to the agenda and the aldermen accepted a bid of $7,837.96 from Valley Lumber for materials to erect 1,500 feet of chain link fence at the Baker Street Park.
The meeting was adjourned at 1:23 p.m. after just over 15 minutes in session. The next meeting is scheduled for Dec. 2, the first Tuesday of the month.
