Law Enforcement Report

WATER VALLEY – Police started the New Year with an attempted armed robbery of the Water Valley Package Store on Blackmur Drive.
The incident began around 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 1, when a lone black male entered the store and pointed a gun at the clerk, according to Lt. Rick McCuan. “He didn’t get anything and ran out,” Lt. McCuan said, adding that the man apparently became frightened.
Police, aided by a K-9 office from the Oxford Police Department, searched the area for over an hour before calling off the hunt. The suspect is still at large.

Lt. McCuan reported the following additional law enforcement activity within the Water Valley City limits during the past two week holiday period:
• Made six arrests for driving under suspension;
• Made an arrest on a warrant from Texas authorities. The suspect is being held in the Grenada County Jail;
• Made an arrest for resisting arrest;
• Made an arrest for DUI, first offense;
• Made two arrests for DUI, second offense;
• Made an arrest for possession of marijuana;
• Made an arrest for possession of marijuana in a motor vehicle;
• Made an arrest for simple domestic assault;
• Took a report of trespassing;
• Took a report of malicious mischief;
• Took a report of an auto burglary;
• Took a report of petty larceny;
• Assisted the Yalobusha County Sheriff’s Department with a felony DUI stop;
• Issued a citation for open container violation;
• Issued two citations for violation of the city dog ordinance;
• Issued a citation for disturbing the peace, loud music in a motor vehicle;
• Issued 40 traffic citations;
• Investigated one vehicle crash.
First Offense DUI, Assault Arrests Frequent In 2008

WATER VALLEY – Police made 406 arrests during 2008, according to crime reports provided by city law enforcement officials. The most serious was for a murder that occurred Nov. 16.
The most frequent offense was driving under suspension for which police made 133 arrests. The next most frequent were DUI, first offense, and simple domestic assault with 32 arrests for each.
Additional arrests for the year included:
• 28 for public drunk;
• 26 for other law enforcement agencies;
• 14 for disorderly conduct;
• 14 for possession of marijuana;
• 13 for marijuana in a motor vehicle;
• 13 for no drivers license;
• 13 for shoplifting, first offense;
• 10 for DUI, second offense;
• 9 for disturbing the peace;
• 8 for simple assault;
• 6 for possession of a controlled substance;
• 6 for drug paraphernalia;
• 5 for trespassing;
• 4 for no drivers license;
• 4 for resisting arrest;
