Nationally acclaimed vocalist and composer Effie Burt will headline Thursday’s Watermelon Music Festival sponsored by Town and Country Garden Club.
Burt was born and raised in Oxford and has graced stages from Beale Street to Montego Bay. She has been a featured vocalist with the Cedar Rapids/Waterloo Symphony Orchestra and has performed at the Jefferson Jackson Democratic Dinner, which was aired on C-SPAN.
Burt has also been a featured vocalist for a number of high-profile political events for such dignitaries as Senator Tom Harkin, Governor Tom Visack, and President Bill Clinton. Most recently, Burt performed before Democratic Presidential candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. She also volunteered her talents locally, performing in the Water Valley Relay for Life Fundraiser. She also performs at the Big Truck Theatre in her childhood home of Oxford.
As a composer, Burt wrote the official song for the State of Iowa. Other featured performers include: dancers, the John Wayne Casserole Gang, and a group from the Valley Dance Company; vocalists who will be among the entertainers, John Milstead, Missy Davis Kitchens, Molly Ferrar, Erik Fearing and Friends, and Radiance of First Christian Church, along with others.
Music by the Sharecroppers will begin at 7 p.m., with the other acts following, beginning at 7:30. The Watermelon Music Festival will be held on Thursday night, July 30, in the City Auditorium. Tickets sell for $7 each and are available from any Town and Country Garden Club member, as well as at Turnage Drug Store and the Chamber of Commerce.
