WATER VALLEY –  Voters in the Water Valley School District will elect a new representative for Position Three in the November 3 election after incumbent school trustee Ray Hawkins announced earlier this year that he would not seek another term.

Hawkins has held the post in the Water Valley School District for almost a decade, and currently serves as board president. His term will expire at the end of the year, as does Position Three in the Coffeeville School District.

Both slots could be on the November 3 ballot if there is more than one candidate qualifying to run in each position. The incumbent Position Three board member in the Coffeeville School District is Lee Bland.

Potential candidates could begin qualifying for either seat beginning Wednesday, August 5, according to Circuit Clerk Daryl Burney. To qualify, a candidate must get 50 signatures, specifically from within the Position of the school district for which they seek to represent.

Water Valley Position Three encompasses some areas in the Beat One North Precinct, Beat Two Water Valley precinct, and Beat Three Northwest Precinct, according to Burney.

The deadline to qualify is September 4, at 5 p.m. Qualifying paperwork can be picked up at courthouses in Water Valley or Coffeeville.
